David's obituary
David Lee Oldenburg, of Boquete, Panama (formerly of Athens, AL), joined His Lord and Savior in eternity on February 23, 2022 after an acute illness.
David was born on January 7, 1950 in Glendale, Arizona to Rev. John and Marguerite Bennick Oldenburg. David was the youngest of 6 children, Marilyn Oldenburg Mobley (George), Bob (Jane and Martha), Rolly (Katherine), Kathy Oldenburg Weickersheimer, and Corky Oldenburg Collins (Charles). Growing up, the family traveled in ministry all over the United States. Once while traveling, all of his siblings were supposed to be watching David when he was backed over by a moving van. He bore the scars from the incident throughout his life and enjoyed sharing the story with his girls about how God was looking out for him and felt he was needed here a little while longer.
David was a student at Mississippi College when he went on a blind date with Charlotte Ann Cannon and after 2 weeks broke off an engagement with a girl in Michigan and asked Charlotte to be his wife. David and Charlotte were married 37 years from October 24, 1969 until she passed away November 15, 2006. During their young married life, they lived in Vicksburg, MS, then traveled around the US including places such as Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, in a travel trailer with their two oldest daughters, Crickett and Krissy in tow. Right before moving back to Vicksburg, Mississippi, Jaime came along and was lovingly called “The Montana Mishap”, however Charlotte eventually admitted Jaime was planned all along, not the mishap she led everyone to believe. Once Jaime arrived and Crickett started elementary school, the family settled in Vicksburg, MS where David worked at Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant, Waterways Experiment Station, and owned his own General Contracting business, Town and Country Contractors. The Oldenburgs were members at Bovina Baptist Church in Bovina and eventually moved their membership to Woodlawn Baptist Church in Culkin.
In 1998, David and Charlotte moved to Athens, AL where David worked as a general contractor for Redstone Arsenal and attended Clements Baptist Church, where he was the overseer for construction of its new sanctuary. In 2006, David lost his first love, Charlotte, to a long term illness. 15 years ago David married his dearest, Yvonne, and since 2016, they lived in Boquete, Panama, where they served as missionaries to the indigenous people of Chiriqui in the Comarca of Soloy as part of Multi-ministries Panama (now Missionary Assist Panama). They also attended Boquete Bible Fellowship. David was excited prior to his sudden departure about establishing a ministry school in Panama. MAP has many ongoing projects which, without David’s vision, would never have come to fruition.
Throughout his life, it was David’s honor to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus in many aspects, including music ministry, as an interim music minister, teaching Sunday school to older adults, and as part of the Emmaus community. He loved his children and grandchildren and was the best at making them all smile with his silly songs…faces and all.
David is survived by his wife, Yvonne, three daughters, Stephanie “Crickett” Oldenburg Cangelose (Chris), Kristen “Krissy” Wilder (Eric), and Jaime Coon (Jeffrey), eight grandchildren, William Thomas Messina, Jr. (Temika), Easton Tate Messina (Morgan), Candace Cangelose, Carlie Cangelose, Lydia Morgan Wilder Scoles (Nathaniel), Erica Gracen Ann Wilder, Jasen Lee Coon, Josie Clarice Coon, and four great-grandchildren, Brayden King, Kingston Porteau, Taylynn Messina, and Payton Messina, and many nieces and nephews, and all those he “adopted” over the years. David was predeceased by his first wife, Charlotte Cannon Oldenburg, brothers Robert “Bob” and Rolland “Rolly” Oldenburg and sister Marilyn Oldenburg Mobley.
A memorial service will be held at his home church, Boquete Bible Fellowship, in Boquete Panama, on Saturday, March 5 and also at his home church in Athens, AL, Clements Baptist Church on Sunday, March 20th at 2pm.
