Known lovingly as Dave, he was a beloved father, husband, brother, and grandfather. His loss leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. A celebration of his fruitful life will be held on January 10, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Ashland - Hanover, VA.
David is survived by his devoted wife, Beryl Carter, whom he married in 1964. He leaves behind precious memories to his children, Camille Atkins and Brian Carter, their spouses Ernest P. Atkins, Jr, and Crystal Reeder and his grandchildren, Brandon Atkins, Christopher Atkins, Cecille Carter, and Gabrielle Carter. He is also survived by his caring sister Aretha Williams, brother Norman Carter, Sr and a whole host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Clarence Carter Sr., his mother, Clara Carter, sister Annie Jones, and brother Clarence Carter Jr. Missing his presence also is his chocolate Labrador, Brownie.
David was a proud alumnus of John M. Gandy High School, class of 1958. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation. In 1968, he joined the Richmond Bureau of Police and was known as "Officer Friendly" to the local school children, where he served until his retirement in 1998. His generosity extended beyond his family, sponsoring many families to immigrate to this country from Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe.
David was a man who relished life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed the flavors of See's Candy, Pork Rinds, Nabs, Chicken, Filipino and, Vietnamese cuisine, pizza, and all kinds of desserts. A fan of Fats Domino, Motown, R&B, and Tina Turner's music, he would often unwind by tuning into news channels. Shopping and traveling were his preferred recreational activities, frequenting favorite locales such as Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Saluda and his family's back yards, including his cousin Jethro's. He loved to soak in the vibrancy of Miami, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City on his vacations.
David's personality was marked by warm affection, particularly towards children. His generosity knew no bounds, and he often shared the lesson of enjoying family and friends with those around him. His love for the color blue and baseball caps was evident in his personal style.
Leaving behind a legacy of generosity and kindness, David will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know him. His indomitable spirit and the lessons he imparted will live on through them. He was truly one of a kind, and his memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
