David's obituary

Honouring the Life of David Michael Manuel

With heavy hearts yet grateful for the beautiful life he shared with us, we celebrate the memory of our father, David Michael Manuel. On December 2, 2023, at 62 years young, he peacefully set sail, surrounded by family and love.

Predeceased by his mother, Sue, and his brother, Craig. Survived by and forever missed by his father, Owen (Lois), his brothers, Mark (Kathy), Stephen (Phylis), Bradley (Lenora), his sisters, Anne-Marie (Norman) and Michele (Rob), his children, Lea (Tomas) and Joshua (Amber), and his grandson, Finley.

David was born in St. Mary’s Hospital in New Westminister, BC, and grew up in the neighbourhood of Sunshine Hills where he was blessed with an incredible circle of friends, most of whom he kept in touch with throughout his life. He later lived in Richmond with his family, and then spent 10 years on the Sunshine Coast overlooking the ocean in Gibsons, before finally settling in Nanaimo, a place he loved and considered home.

As a fiercely independent young man, David set off to become a fisherman and embark on a career that wasn’t just about work, but a response to the call of the ocean. As the one place where he felt most at ease throughout his life, the ocean was David’s happy place. Whenever presented with the opportunity, David would escape onto the water. Whether casting nets or just out for a joy ride, nothing filled his soul quite like being out on the vast open waters. More than just work, these early years as a fisherman also set the foundation for lifelong friendships, years full of laughter and memories he always held close.

As a devoted father, proud new grandfather, loyal son, best brother and friend, David was a pillar in the lives of those he touched. Always one who could be counted on for unconditional love and support, his genuine interest and gentle soul offered a soft place to land. Through a life led with kindness and a heart that sometimes seemed too big for his own good, David left an everlasting impression on those lucky enough to know him, and to love him.

David’s life was anchored by simplicity–never one for embellishment, he embraced the little moments and found happiness in life’s uncomplicated pleasures. He loved to laugh and had a great sense of humour. And that smile–oh, that smile!

An incredible family man, David always put his family first. He remained close with his ex-wife throughout the years, exemplifying his commitment to love and family for the benefit of his children. As a father, he led by example, teaching us to be kind, to practice forgiveness and patience, to not take life too seriously, and to remember to laugh, stay positive, and be happy.

It can’t be said enough that David’s happiest moments came from time spent with family, and there was no greater joy than the moment he welcomed his first grandchild, Finley, to this world. Being called Grandpa was a badge of honour he wore with pride.

Later in life, during his 26 years on the water with BC Ferries, David’s influence extended beyond that of just an employee. He was counted on as a leader, a teacher, and a mentor–becoming a dear friend to many and leaving a mark on the hearts and careers of those fortunate to work alongside him.

Each new chapter of his life’s journey was earmarked by deep friendships that stood the test of time. The sadness we all experienced towards the end of his life was truly overshadowed by the outpouring of love and support from those he had touched at various times throughout his life–a clear reflection of the man he was and the life he lived.

David’s rich life will live on in the hearts and actions of those he left behind. Gone too soon, remembered forever, and loved always.

A memorial service will be held for David on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Seaview Pentecostal Church in Surrey, BC at 2pm.

In honouring David's memory, the family kindly requests that instead of flowers, donations be made to support Pulmonary Fibrosis and Cancer research. Additionally, they encourage everyone to sign up as organ donors—a cause close to David's heart.
