David's obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of David 'Papa Bear' Mathews, born on October 27, 1960, who departed this life on November 16, 2024. He touched countless lives with his selfless spirit, unwavering loyalty, and infectious hilarity.
David leaves behind a vibrant family who cherished him deeply: his daughters Amanda Goodwin and Andrea Mathews, his son David Joseph Mathews II, his daughter-in-law Camille Mathews, and his grandchildren Shannon Pierce, Aurora Juliette Pierce, Harley Jordan Goodwin, Jaden Robert Goodwin, Levee Mathews, Zydeco Mathews, Cypress Mathews, Ballad Burckel, and Nolarain Burckel, as well as a soon to arrive first great-grandchild, Baby Pierce. He was preceded in death by his father Franklin Mathews and his brother Frankie Mathews.
David's life story is one of service and dedication. He began his career in the United States Marine Corps in 1978, a commitment that spoke to his deep sense of patriotism. A man of many interests, David was an enthusiastic participant in many weather watchers groups, and was always partial to a game of darts. He had an affinity for any cause that dealt with veterans, a testament to his enduring respect for his fellow servicemen and servicewomen.
He derived joy from life's simple pleasures; the rich taste of a muffuletta, a roast beef po boy, red velvet cake, and guacamole, the refreshing fizz of Dr. Pepper, the melodies of Kiss, Queen, and the humorous memories related to “Zombie" and “In The Middle Of The Night.” He loved watching the weather and the news, rooting for the New Orleans Saints, and spending time weather watching and caring for others. David's world was colorful, and his favorite among them all was red.
David's legacy is one of selflessness, love, and respect. His life lessons, such as, “I don’t care if you’re going to be a burger flipper. If you’re going to be a burger flipper, be the best burger flipper you can be,” will endure in the hearts of those who knew him. His spirit will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure to get to know him.
