David's obituary

David Charles Hymer, of North Palm Beach Florida passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2022, at age 80. Dave is preceded in death by his parents Charles Hymer and Hattie Hymer. Born in Hamilton, Ohio on July 27, 1941, Dave is survived by his wife Pamela (Pam), son Christian (Chris) Hymer and his wife Heather, son Charles (Chase) Hymer and his wife Rowena, and daughter Melinda (Mindy) and her husband Christopher Clifton, as well as grandchildren Scarlette, Jacob, Stella, Ian, Ezra, Landon, and Jeni.

Dave worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft throughout a career spanning over 35 years, where he worked his way up from a new college graduate into senior management. He was always proud of his work with the teams at Pratt & Whitney responsible for the F-100 engine program (powering the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon) and the F117-PW-100 engine (powering the C-17 Globemaster). In retirement, Dave enjoyed giving his time and energy to help folks wanting to start small businesses including helping them formulate their business plans and to navigate the process of financing.

Dave and his parents moved from Ohio to Florida when Dave was a young boy. Raised in Haines City, Florida, he was a graduate of the University of Florida and a fan of Gator Football, and was a longtime resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. In later years, he resided in Brevard, NC, Asheville, NC and Bonita Springs, FL, before living out his final years in North Palm Beach. A man of faith in God, he was patient, kind and consistently supportive (whether with a helping hand or some tough love) to the everlasting gratitude of his children.

An outgoing and social person, Dave made many friends throughout his life and valued those relationships. Armed with an outstanding sense of humor he enjoyed practical jokes, elicited many groans from his kids through his repertoire of “dad jokes,” and was someone who could make people feel at ease and laugh. Never one to take himself too seriously, Dave was renowned for dressing up as an old woman to help host friendly retirement roasts for coworkers and friends (and tell a few ribald jokes) as “Auntie Ruth.” Good with his hands, Dave was able to fix just about anything that his kids occasionally broke. A man of many interests, his hobbies ran the gamut from woodworking to oil painting. He loved travel and especially enjoyed New Zealand, Australia, and Kenya as well as time spent with Pam and her family in England and the Netherlands.

A lifelong connoisseur of fine art, Dave instilled his passion for dramatic entertainment in his children by exposing them throughout their formative years to some of his favorite shows like Benny Hill, Laugh-In and Hee Haw. Dave played sports throughout his life, including baseball, golf, and tennis. In retirement, he and Pam actively playing competitive singles and doubles league tennis. He enjoyed the game tremendously and played until he could no longer.

A lover of animals, Dave enjoyed the company of several dogs and many cats throughout his life. His only counsel to his children about pets was “don’t ever have a pet squirrel like I did… that damned thing would bite me on every day of the week that ended with a ‘y’.” His children faithfully followed that advice and have passed it down to their kids who limited their rodents to the occasional hamster.

David was buried with his childhood cowboy boots alongside his parents at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in West Palm Beach. Happy trails, Dave and although we wish the ride into the sunset would have taken far longer, you were loved, you will always be loved, and it was a beautiful ride. Thank you for taking us along with you.
