I had the pleasure of working with David at Legg Mason. I was in IT support, while he was a Chartered Financial Analyst managing a stock portfolio. When I left in 2006 to start my own IT business, I quickly realized how challenging it was to build a business from the ground up. Fortunately, I secured a contract to supply materials to a local college. However, I needed $60,000 to purchase the materials from the vendor before I could invoice the college.

Lacking the necessary funds and being new to business, I was denied loans and credit. My only option was to “factor” the invoice, which meant a company would pay the vendor on my behalf, invoice the college, and then pay me after deducting their fees, leaving me with very little. Desperate, I called David and explained my situation. He generously offered to loan me the money and had his assistant wire the funds to me that very same day.

I offered to pay him interest and sign a promissory note, but he declined, saying he believed in me and thought I was a good man and that was good enough. True to his word, I received the funds that day. David’s generosity and kindness saved my business and supported my family during a financially difficult time. His help was instrumental in the success of my business, which I still run nearly 20 years later.

David will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, compassion, patience, trust, and intelligence. He treated everyone with respect, from the affluent to the “little guys” like me. I will always cherish the time we spent together as co-workers at Legg Mason, the company Christmas party at his home that he and Betsy opened to us, and the tickets he gifted me to see the Boys Choir of Harlem at the Berkshire one Christmas. I look forward to thanking him all over again when we all meet together on that glorious day in the great meeting place. Blessings to his family ❤

Thinking of all the Nelson's today,  David is missed by all . Grateful for the time we knew and the good times we had. 

There is no doubt loosing David creates a void for many of us. He will always be missed and we treasure the time we knew him. Truly a wonderful human being.

Growing up, I lived in the Chicago area and my cousin David and family lived in St Louis area, so we didn't see each other very often.  That said, whenever we did visit, it was always a very special occasion.  I remember one particular time that David and his mom Amy drove their VW Bug up to Wheaton for a visit.  It was 1964.  I remember because we all went out to the opening of the brand new Disney film, Mary Poppins.  That has always been a very special and favorite film of mine, and a big part of the reason is that I was with David and Amy to see it.  David and I have not seen each other in person in many years, but I know I will see him again.  My love and condolences to David's family and friends.

My condolences to David's family. I first met David when our daughters became playmates and as is the course, the parents became friends. He loved our girls and we all watched them grow up. I remember once he drove all the way home from out children’s ballet recital because My Sara left her headband at home and he did not want her to feel awkward . Christmas Eve Caroling parties , crab feasts and every Bryn Mawr School event The kindest friend as my husband lay dying , as were his entire family.  So many memories of how he and Betsy invited me to go out to dinners and events after I became a new widow … the dearest most caring man . may his memory be a blessing forever .

I am sending out my love and deepest condolences to Betsy and all the "Nelson Girls" as well as David's beloved grandkids. David was so easy to know and be comfortable with and learn from. Terry and I felt welcome in your beautiful home and enjoyed you company throughout the years. My Jen and your Jen have shared so much joy in their years of friendship and now they share the terrible loss of their fathers. I am wishing all of you gentle path through your grief and want you to know how much David will be missed by so many. May his memory be a blessing.
