David's obituary
David Paul Eatherly of Siletz, Oregon
died at his home April 18, 2022,
surrounded by family, friends, and love.
He was diagnosed with a brain tumor just
101 days prior. He was 50 years young.
Dave was born in Southern California on
Sept. 9, 1971, to Larry and Sue Eathelry.
The family moved to Siletz in 1975 and
made it their home. Dave attended Siletz
school and graduated from Toledo high
in 1990. He played baseball, football,
wrestled and was a Boy Scout.
He loved the outdoors and worked in the
logging industry until a near fatal accident
in 1995. He reinvented himself and went
on to work in sales and delivery for the
Leather Furniture Co. in Portland, OR
where he lived for the next 14-15 years. He
also worked doing landscaping, grounds
keeping and maintenance for the City of
Siletz and Siletz Valley School after moving
home in 2008 to help care for his dad who
had a traumatic brain injury and more so
after his dad's cancer diagnosis in 2011.
He worked odd jobs in the neighborhood
and around town in his spare time, stating
“It’s a great way to stay in shape!”. His odd
jobs took him as far as Humboldt County,
San Diego and Prescott, AZ.
David was a history buff, referred to
as “Factoid Dave”, “Google” and “The
Mayor” by family and friends due to his
vast knowledge of everything you ever
needed to know. Another nickname
he had was “D-9” which he earned for
being a bulldozer of a guy, as he always
impressed people with his strength and
stamina. He was an avid outdoorsman
and loved hunting, hiking, kayaking,
scanners, CB’s and antennas. He was a
licensed amatuer ham radio operator:
KE7OEK, aka “The Ax”.
Dave was also a big sports fan; his favorite
team being the beloved 'Stillers'. He was
happy he was able to attend a handful of
home games in Pennsylvania. He collected
Steelers and other sports memorabilia most
of his life and was proud of his collection.
He also coached his neices softball team
when she attended Siletz High School.
In 2009 after a family friend went
missing on a hunting trip, Dave found
his calling, Lincoln County Search and
Rescue. He reinvented himself once
again and put himself to good use for the
greater good. He loved helping people,
serving his community, being involved,
and being useful. He had earned status
as Team Lieutenant and was so very
proud to serve with the good people on
the Lincoln County Sheriff ’s Search and
Rescue Team for the past 13 years.
His selfless efforts were appreciated on
countless missions by the community
and his teammates who referred to him
as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).
They became his family and we now
consider them part of ours. He was a
certified tracker, earning his “designated
man-tracker” certificate and was looking
forward to achieving his next tracker cert.
Dave stayed connected with his childhood
friends who gathered to care for him in his
last weeks here with us. The comradery
and love was 35-45 years strong and Dave
appreciated every minute with them.
He was not a simple guy, but he
enjoyed living a simple life. He was very
hardworking, dedicated and generous
in everything he did. He was a shy and
humble man who always looked for the
good in everything and everyone.
Dave will be missed beyond measure
but we are grateful for the love and
friends he leaves us with. Raise your
glass (Mirror Pond Pale Ale, of course)
to D9 Dave and look for the good!
David is survived by mother, Sue Eatherly,
sisters Janet Paige and Jenn
(Ted) Goldenberg, nieces Melanie (Roger)
Agosto, Lin and Emma Goldenberg and
great-niece, Madeline Paige Agosto, who
he adored; and so many extended family
members and loving friends.
A memorial service will be held on May
21st at 11:00 am at the Siletz Valley School.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation
in his honor and memory to Lincoln
County Search and Rescue, 225 W Olive
St, Newport, Oregon 97365.
Dave’s family would like to say a special
thanks to Hector De Los Santos, City View
Funeral Home, Lincoln County Search
and Rescue and staff at the Siletz Valley School
