I remember walking with my mom through a department store in Cleveland as a kid. Mom asked me, “Do you hear that music? That’s your Uncle Dave.” I was amazed. Dave’s music wasn’t played in front of crowds in stadiums, it was in the background, subtly improving the shopping experience for hundreds of people. His creativity expanded into sculptures made of old industrial products, given a new life, taking on a new meaning at the hands of Uncle Dave. These too would add to the public ambiance, hanging in Cleveland hotels and other businesses. Later he would go into business for himself making unique bracelets and talking about the Lord with fervor to his customers. Though Dave’s body might be gone, it is a comfort to know that his heart and soul are still out there hanging from ceilings, walls and wrists. But the man himself was perhaps the most intriguing work of art. Genius at times, and like most creative minds he found his own path through life. I will be forever grateful that mine got to cross a few times with his.
