Daryl's obituary

After a prolonged battle with cancer, Ms. Daryl Elmore Burrow died peacefully in her home on October 9, 2020 in Laurel, Maryland at the age of 67.

Daryl is survived by her children, son Christopher Burrow; and daughter Megan Wanzer; grandsons David Wanzer and Dylan Burrow; as well as siblings: brother John Elmore; and sisters Denise Benson and Deidra Gervais. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents Valerie and Rush Elmore; brother Rush “Guy” Elmore; and loving son LCpl Dennis James Burrow, proud Marine killed in the line of service to his country.

Daryl was born on February 16, 1953 in Glen Cove, New York to Valerie and Rush Elmore. She graduated from Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing in 1978 with a diploma in nursing. Daryl began working for several hospitals in Virginia and Maryland, working as a cardiac and emergency room nurse during her early career. She and ex-husband Rhea Morgan Burrow Jr. welcomed three children into their home and Daryl set about teaching them a love of nursing, medicine, and gardening. Her children remember her as a resilient and creative mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals. She was a dedicated and caring individual who loved nursing and was passionate about sharing her wisdom and experience to the newest generations. Daryl retired from nursing after working for 17 years at Holy Cross Hospital as a mother/baby nurse. Daryl took her children to visit her work at the hospital often, where they would make wonderful memories of wheelchair races and eating popsicles. Her love of nursing encouraged all of her children to begin their careers in public service. Her legacy continues with her daughter also becoming a nurse.

Daryl was very much an Aquarius and an avid dreamer. Daryl was accomplished at gardening and design and often joked she was a “failed architect” as she dreamed of her new designs but never pursued it as a career. She redesigned all of her homes, built extensions on her homes, and created expansive outdoor living areas with ponds and pools that resembled lagoons. She also helped her children create their own wonderful gardens in their new homes. She often joked that she should put her plants on wheels because she would redesign her gardens so often and would make her children lovingly do the work! She was a proud member of her neighborhood garden club where she made several life-long friends. Other little-known hobbies of Daryl’s were doing stained glass designs and creating miniature houses. Although she deeply mourned the loss of her late son Dennis, she was very proud of both of her son’s military service and was a proud member of the Gold Star Families.

A celebration of life will be planned for October 9th, 2021 from 12-2 pm at The Central Parke at Victoria Falls Retirement Community Center. Address: 13701 Belle Chasse Blvd, Laurel, MD 20707. More information is posted to her personal social media pages. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Daryl’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to her favorite charity, The Wounded Warrior’s Project.

The family would like to thank her caregivers and the hospital staff for their dedication and the amazing care they provided during her last weeks. The family was awed by their efforts and honor they provided to a fellow nurse.
