My name is Ken Gibson and I was one of Darrell’s best friends from 1953 to 1958. I don’t remember how we first met but we walked to Junior High and High School for 5 years. At that time the 405 freeway wasn’t built yet and I could get to his house by walking accross the dirt section that the freeway was eventually built on. We would meet Jack Slocumbe on the way and the three of us would walk together. In that five year period, there was one year (1955 to 1956)that we would ride to Wilson High in Jack’s dad car and also Riley rode with us for that one year. Darrell and I would either hitch hike or ride the bus to downtown Long Beach to go to the movies or to the amusement park called the Pike. Also we were both born in Oklahoma which was a connection. If I remember correctly Darrell was a member of the Sac and Fox tribe and related to Jim Thorpe. There was a large painting of Jim Thorpe on the wall in his home. I didn’t belong to the football and baseball teams, but played basketball. The last time that I saw Darrell was just before he moved to the Visalia area and never heard of where he lived but would have liked to visited him but that never happened. I was sorry to hear of his passing but have many fond memories of our time together. I knew Dave Groff but didn’t run around with Dave. I mention this because I believe Dave named a son after Darrell. I hope someone reads this short biography. Darrell was the best athlete at Millikan in my opinion.
