Darla's obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Darla Sumners. Darla, lovingly also known as DJ, was born on April 4, 1942, and peacefully left us on May 24, 2025 surrounded by her family.

Mother had a witty personality, described by loved ones as being smart, decisive, compassionate, and loving. She taught all around her lessons of love, strength, how to overcome adversity, and the importance of a strong work ethic and being of strong will. Above all, Darla will be remembered for her legacy of always teaching  family how to love one another.

A devoted mother, loving grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and mother-in-law. Darla is survived by her daughters Tanya Campbell and husband Michael Campbell and Stephanie Holmes and husband Jeff Holmes. Grandchildren Samantha Covington, Bryan and wife Erica Covington, Tyler Morrison, Rylie Campbell, Brylee Holmes, Levi Campbell, and Dylan Campbell. Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Darla was preceded in death by her beloved mother Edith Gorman and step father Jim Gorman, dear father Lawrence Harris, loving stepmother Opals Harris, and her brothers Orrie and Carl Harris.

Throughout her life, Darla found solace in the joy of reading and the serenity of beach-side retreats. Her love for these activities brought her much happiness and peace.

In January of this year, Darla was diagnosed with a progressive and rare brain disease. In lieu of flowers, a donation fund has been set up in her honor on www.everloved.com under the name Darla Harris.  All proceeds will go to Rarediseases.org. In this way, we hope to celebrate and continue her compassionate spirit.

Our mother's departure has left a void in our hearts, but her indomitable spirit and loving memories will continue to inspire and guide us. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
