Danny Chi Kei's obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Danny Chi Kei Li. Born on March 29, 1935, he left this world on September 16, 2025. A man of incomparable spirit, he enriched the lives of those around him with his creative, generous, inspirational and hardworking nature.
Danny's passion for life was reflected in various aspects. From a young age, he displayed a love of Cantonese opera, beginning his professional career at a tender age of 8. His talent led him to emerge and rise early in Hong Kong's Cantonese opera field in the 1960s. During his performing career, he toured Southeast Asia, and North America, as well as Europe. He immigrated to New York in 1970, opening new pathways for his creativity in the business world.
An influential figure in society, he served as president and vice president of 華人車衣商會 from 1975 to 1980 and established and advocated for the Council for a Cleaner Chinatown beginning in 1995. His contribution to New York's Chinatown community and its business development included franchising the first Maria's Bakery from Hong Kong in 1984 and opening the renowned Golden Unicorn Restaurant in 1988, as well as Chinatown's first hotel in 1992.
His love for Cantonese opera did not diminish through the years and he was able to fully manifest his passion once again upon retirement. In 2004, he established the Art of Cantonese Opera Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization intended to foster appreciation and promotion for the art among New York's Chinese community and beyond. Until 2020, he was also active in Hong Kong as a producer and artistic director for numerous Cantonese opera productions. His dedication to the art form earned him the distinction of Artist of the Year for Xiqu by the HKADC in 2015.
Despite his significant accomplishments, Danny was also a man of simplicity who cherished the wellness derived from practices like Tai chi. His life lessons—a passion for learning, a love of sharing, and a deep appreciation for the arts—will continue to inspire future generations. His legacy, deeply rooted in kindness and generosity, will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
Danny is survived by his beloved wife Elissa Wai Fun, his daughter Eliza Pui Yan, and his third younger brother Robert 志良, who mourn his loss deeply. His departure has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
A viewing in his honor will be held on October 3, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Ng Fook Funeral Services, followed by a funeral service on October 4, 2025 at 10:30 AM at the same location. His final resting place will be the serene Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, where his burial will take place on October 4, 2025 at 12:30 PM.
As we bid farewell to Danny , we hold on to the beautiful memories he has shared with us. His abundant spirit and love for life will continue to shine in our hearts. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to share in his journey. Rest in peace, Danny.
