Dan's obituary
DANIEL ARTHUR REICKER
January 27, 1942 - December 13, 2025
Daniel Arthur Reicker passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025, in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 83. Though Dan was often a “larger-than-life” presence, he exemplified the phrase “still waters run deep.” Hiding beneath his calm, tough exterior lived a wise, kind-spirited man with complex emotions, who was fiercely loyal and a steadfast advocate for the people and causes he loved. Dan carried the quiet confidence of someone who did not need to posture—he listened first, then spoke with authority, conviction, and deep knowledge. Those who knew him well cherished his wry, sometimes sardonic sense of humor, his intellectual curiosity, his honesty, and his profound sense of integrity and justice. Perhaps, above all, Dan was known for his willingness to help others. His quiet generosity touched countless lives—whether through a helping hand, a much-needed opportunity, or a bit of free legal counsel. His magnanimity characterized the man whose tender heart had room in it for those fortunate enough to be part of his life.
Born on January 27, 1942, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Dan grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated from Serra High School in San Mateo in 1960 and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco in 1964. Dan began his service in the United States Army in 1965, stationed in Augsburg, Germany, where he met the love of his life, Romy. Dan and Romy were married in Germany on September 2, 1967, marking the beginning of a partnership that would span nearly six decades.
Dan rose to the rank of Captain while in the Army. He also received a special Army commendation medal recognizing exceptional performance as the leader of his unit. After his discharge in 1968, Dan returned home with his new bride to pursue his legal education. He earned his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1971. He was admitted to the California Bar in 1972 and the District of Columbia Bar in 1973. Dan began his legal career with Schramm & Raddue, LLP, in Santa Barbara in 1971, and opened the firm’s Washington, D.C. office in 1973. In 1996, he co-founded Reicker, Pfau, Pyle, and McRoy, LLP, which became recognized as one of the top law firms in California, where he practiced until his retirement in 2024. Even then, while no longer taking on new cases, Dan remained professionally active on behalf of a few long-term clients until his passing.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dan earned numerous honors. He served as Issue Editor of the Hastings Law Journal from 1970 to 1971 and was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Thurston Society. His scholarly work included Specific Performance of Shopping Center Leases in California, published in the Hastings Law Journal in 1972.
Dan’s love of music—especially opera—was one of his defining passions. A devotee of Opera Santa Barbara (OSB), he was one of the first to lend his ardent support when the company started. He subsequently sat on its Board of Directors, serving as in-house legal counsel and as a member of its Finance and Executive Committees for 25 years. Dan’s generous personal and financial support helped ensure the lasting presence of OSB’s musical gift in the Santa Barbara arts community. Even while struggling with his health, Dan attended its latest performance with Romy in November, just weeks before his passing.
In addition to opera, Dan enjoyed concerts by CAMA and the Santa Barbara Symphony, attending them regularly. When his serious nature softened, he also delighted in sharing his love of country music—especially when surrounded by an encouraging audience of family/friends and a great Cabernet. Fabled also for his love of extraordinary wines, Dan might also digress, giving his guests a brief, insightful lesson on the history and essence of that vintage Cab (and, if lucky, a hot stock tip too)!
Dan also found fulfillment as an active member of Santa Barbara’s Investment Club, where he played a key role in its development, growth, and success. A football enthusiast and a fervent basketball fan as well, Dan particularly enjoyed cheering on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
When he was not busy with his demanding law practice, Dan was also an avid reader and a contemplative thinker. He had an insatiable appetite for history, finance, and politics, and he loved engaging others in challenging debates, stirring the pot, and playing devil's advocate as conversations ensued. In later years, he could frequently be found listening to podcasts and interviews from respected news outlets and think tanks, sometimes needing a gentle prompt from Romy to remove his earbuds before dinner.
Dan is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Rosemarie J. Reicker (Romy) of Santa Barbara; his son, Rick D. Reicker, and daughter-in-law, Megan Zetta Reicker of Walnut Creek; Megan’s mother, Mary Wells, and Rick’s brother in law, Evan Wells; Dan’s sisters, Phyllis A. Ferran of San Diego, Helen R. Lawrence of Rohnert Park, and Mary Kathleen Reicker of Tigard, Oregon; 11 nieces and nephews, and 12 grand nieces and grand-nephews in the U.S. Dan is also loved and remembered by a nephew, Alexander Stemmer, and a niece, Simone Stemmer, of Germany, Alex’s wife, and four additional grand nieces and nephews from Germany.
He was preceded in death by his cherished granddaughter, Talula Reicker; his parents, Frederick A. Reicker and Virginia R. Reicker; his brother, Frederick A. Reicker; and his nephew, Daniel A. Rohrbach; his mother-in-law, Charlotte Speck of Germany; his sister in law, Christl Stemmer; and her husband, Adi Stemmer of Germany.
Dan’s kind heart and benevolent spirit live on in the many lives he touched. His legacy endures in those who knew him, loved him, and were forever changed by his generosity. His light will continue to shine in all our hearts.
