I'm so sad to learn of Dan's passing. We had lost touch over the years, and I decided to look him up.
We met when I lived in Schaumburg many years ago in the early 2000s, and became fast friends. We'd hang out out playing video games and going out to eat (I remember us going to Big Bowl and getting what he affectionately called "squidlings" for an appetizer). I moved away for a while, and we did get to reconnect a while back, and had lunch together downtown, and it was like we hadn't spent any time apart at all. He was always extremely intelligent, and I always enjoyed our conversations.
Even though we hadn't seen each other for a long time, this hits hard. I don't know what happened, but I hope Dan is at peace.

We have no words, really... we are in complete shock about Dan's passing.
We drifted apart, a bit, as people do, and only learned about his death because yesterday we randomly decided to look him up.
He might not have felt like it but he had a lot of friends here in Austria/Europe. Everyone here is utterly heartbroken.
We hope he finally found his peace.

Damn and blast. Dan was a good friend in the 90s and 2000s and we went for drinks when he had some time back in our little Wisconsin town a few years back. I remember feeling small compared to how worldly and experienced he'd become.
Dan always had the sharpest wit, easily outsmarted me at every step when we were teenagers (and still did)- but never seemed to mind me struggling to keep up.

i was shocked and saddened to hear of dan's passing.
when i was a child, dan stayed with my family while living in chicago. i will never forget their patience and kindness that they showed to myself and my sibling. they didn't mind a curious kid sitting over their shoulder, bothering them and asking them all sorts of silly questions.
i will never forget waking up - way past when the rest of the family had fallen asleep - and sneaking downstairs to watch them play final fantasy and diablo. i can safely say that without them i would not be the same person.
i think they had promised they'd let me play final fantasy 7 when i got older, haha. it's a fond memory that we shared a laugh over at a more recent event...
even as i grew older, whenever dan showed up to a family event, i was always so excited to get to speak with them and hear their thoughtful, expansive perspective. even as time and space grew, i always held them close to my heart.
i just know they have found peace and rest, and i will forever be grateful that i got to know dan maschmeier.

Daniel is the most intelligent, passionate and kind hearted individual. It was a honor to have known him.
Daniel would come into one of the local restaurants in town where I work at. We had chatted a few times briefly at the bar. I was always so intrigued by his demeanor and the way his spirit, thirst for life, was nearly tangible. Anyone could see there is infinite gears turning behind his lovely eyes.
One night, our chat lasted several hours. Before I knew it, 7pm turns to 11 and we had talked the night away. I look around and it’s just us and the last employees of the night. I can’t remember a time I had been that enthralled, engrossed, in a conversation. It’s almost similar to when you’re a kid, and anyone is your friend. And instantly you’re best friends with a stranger and are comfortable with another to a point it feels like you’ve always known each other.
We talked about anything and everything. He was a big talker but also one of the best listeners. I always looked forward to our talks over dinner or lunch. It breaks my heart that his beautiful mind isn’t here now. He has so many thoughts and opinions that are invaluable. His heart reminds me of a puppy, filled with warmth and generosity and a yearning to feel love as well.
My heart goes out to anyone who knows Daniel. He’s forever loved and no doubt he’s an angel in the sky. Or maybe he’s traveling in the TARDIS as a free spirit, satiating all of his curiosity about the universe we share. We’ll carry him in our hearts forever & always.

I was stunned and sorry to hear about Daniel's passing. We worked together at two different jobs and played D&D together. He gave me one of the most unique and thoughtful wedding gifts involving some of our wedding mascots that left us puzzled for weeks. It was so representative of his considerateness and cleverness. He will certainly be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear of Daniel's passing. I've only had the privilege of knowing him a short while, but his passion, creativity, and magnanimous spirit had always made a deep impression on me. His compassion and mischief will be missed. My deepest condolences for your loss.

I'm sorry to hear of Daniel's passing - he was one of the most energetic and sharp-witted people I know. During the year-long project we worked on together, I always leaned on him to help us find a path forward for every setback we faced, and his jokes would surprise laughs out of me when I was stressed out of my mind.
Rest in peace.
