Daniel's obituary

Daniel Hughes, 47, of London, UK, passed away on 13 April, 2024 after a brilliant life, full of achievements, love, and friendship.

Dan was born on 5 December, 1976 to Carla Susan Hughes in London, UK. After a difficult childhood, Daniel won a place to read Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, where he studied from 1996-2001. He excelled in his studies and continued his academic path with a PhD in Molecular Biology and Genomics from the University of Cambridge.

After his PhD graduation in 2007, Daniel moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he lived with his partner and then wife, Rachel Hughes. In 2010 they returned together to live in Cambridge, UK, the place where they had originally met. While he was in Rio, Daniel had studied computer languages that would, along with his scientific expertise, allow him to pursue a career in bioinformatics; he also learned fluent Portuguese.

Daniel had a career in cutting edge science. He landed his first research job at the prestigious Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge and continued his very successful career in the United States, including positions at Baylor College of Medicine and Columbia University.

Daniel had dreams and plans of retiring next to the water and surrounded by animals - his two favourite things in the world.

Dan is survived by his wife Rachel; his mother Carla, his sister Abby and nephews and niece.

Dan touched many people and warmed many hearts.  All in his own unique way.  The world is duller without Dan.

A celebration of Dan's life will be planned and communicated through this website. A provisional plan is to hold a Catholic mass in Brazil in the next couple of weeks and a celebration with friends in the UK within in a couple of months.
