Although we have not known you and Dan for long, his unexpected passing hit us like a ton of bricks.  In all of the years I've known Zach, he has not so quickly quickly or easily accepted as dear a friend so quickly. Dan was genuine, both in the endearing way and in the bluntly honest way-- a truly hard thing to come by these days.  The first thought I had after you spoke to Zach was that I had imagined us finding any excuse to meet you two for the next twenty years, regardless of how far away you might be.  This loss came far too soon.

I am so deeply sorry for the loss you are experiencing, Rachel. I truly can't imagine what you are going through now, and I hope you know we are here if you need anything at all.

Zach already feels this loss tremendously, and will for years to come.  Dan was an incredible friend and will be missed.

I am absolutely gutted by the news of Dan’s passing. I knew Dan as a colleague at Columbia. As is probably true for a lot of people, my first impression of Dan was his prickly demeanor and complete intolerance for bullshit. It was also very apparent how brilliant Dan was. I’ve been in science for about 20 years and occasionally have had the pleasure of crossing paths with individuals who are so bright that it’s actually astonishing how smart they are. Dan was one of those people. He could (and often did) talk at length about complex topics in computer science, genetics, philosophy, wine, etc. His intellect and depth of knowledge was something truly remarkable to behold. As I’m sure some of you know, Dan was also a tremendous friend. He would not hesitate to stand up for others and what he believed in and would walk to the ends of the Earth to help those he considered friends. I was looking forward to connecting with Dan in the next few months to reminisce about our times in the trenches over some margaritas and I will deeply lament that I was not able to do that. The world is truly a lesser place without Dan in it and I will miss him very much.
Daniel clearly made a big impact during the short time he was here.  I am so sad to hear of his passing.  Though I only knew him for a short time, his beautiful spirit made an incredible impact on his co-workers.  Prayers for family and friends.
Oh man, so sorry to hear about this, I worked with Dan both at Hinxton and then again at Baylor, he was genuinely one of the most extraordinary individuals I have ever met, crazy talented... What a loss...

Shocked and saddened to hear this. Dan and I only worked together for a year, but bonded quickly. When I arrived in Houston he was one of the people I could trust immediately- personally and professionally. He had a sharp mind, sharper wit, and pushed for excellence. I remember when he hosted a super bowl party, calling it an "absurd sporting spectacle." You will be missed Dan.

Really shocked to hear about Dan. My deepest heartfelt condolences to you Rachel and y'alls family. Dan was such a talented fun-loving person and a great colleague. To all the fun times we all shared drinking cheap beers, eating "crips" :P at Valhalla and of course the margaritas in Houston! Cheers Dan🍻. You will be missed. Rest in peace.
My heart is breaking for Dan's family, and his professional family. I only just started to collaborate with Dan after he joined the Southern Research team, but he made quite the impression. I truly enjoyed his wit and intelligence. Knowing my collaborators, who I consider friends, are hurting in this devastating loss is truly heartbreaking, and I am holding each of you - and Dan's wife, kitties, family, and other loved ones - in my prayers.
Dan was the fiercest friend to us all, and he always did everything he could for everyone. I already miss him.
