Dan's obituary
Daniel J. Ball, of Redding, CA, beloved husband, father, brother and friend passed away unexpectedly on August 10, 2021 from sepsis complications (gangrenous cholecystitis) at the age of 64. He is survived by his wife and two children, daughter-in-law, five siblings and their families.
Dan was the first-born son of Bob Ball and Joan (Pesavento) Ball. He grew up in Davis, CA with a large extended family there and attended the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. He worked as a forester for Sierra Pacific Industries for over 30 years.
An avid outdoorsman, Dan loved the mountains, a strenuous hike or camping trip, cross-country skiing, and fishing on less trafficked high elevation lakes and streams. He shared his passion for nature and the outdoors with his children from an early age, making a good humored effort to quiz them on their newly acquired knowledge of forest flora, fauna, and fungi.
He enjoyed simple pleasures like camping with family and friends, attending his kids soccer and basketball tournaments on the weekends, a good red wine or microbrew, San Francisco Giants baseball, and big dogs (Labradors in particular). Dan had broad interests, eclectic tastes in music and the arts and was a voracious reader.
He possessed an amiable, caring, and easy-going nature, a dry sense of humor and a very quick wit. Dan was a quiet man and possessed a rather stoic approach to life. He could often be counted upon to be the voice of intelligence and reason, and the person to go to when seeking advice or solace. This heart-breaking loss will be felt by all who knew Dan, especially his friends and family.
A celebration of Dan's life was held at Lake of the Woods in Oregon. Those who wish to honor his memory may make donations to the American Red Cross or UC Davis Children's Hospital.
