Dan's obituary

In Loving Memory of Dan Elijah Shazier


Dan Shazier, age 66, passed away on November 15, 2024, after a courageous battle with bladder cancer.  He was born on June 11, 1958, to the late Lovett DeShazier Sr. and Susie Barber Shazier in Tallahassee, Fl but was raised in Orlando, Fl where he built a life full of purpose, love, and service to others.

 Dan retired from Rollins College Bookstore (Follett) February 13, 2023, after dedicating 26 years to the institution. A cherished member of the workplace, he was known for his hard work, kindness, and genuine spirit.

Beyond his career, Dan was a passionate and valued basketball referee. For over 30 years he officiated high school basketball games and for more than two decades, he served as a NAIA and JUCO college official. His leadership and integrity on the court earned him immense respect in the basketball referee community. 

A proud U.S. Army veteran, Dan served his country with dedication for seven years.                                                           Dan was a lifelong man of faith and a member of the Mt. Sinai Seven-Day Adventist Church but later in life, he started learning about Jehovah God and his Kingdom and the promise of a paradise earth. He enjoyed the things he was learning through his wife who is one of Jehovah's Witnesses and wanted to know more.

Dan brought immense joy to all who knew him and his life was a testament to resilience, kindness, and unwavering faith. He touched the hearts of many, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of compassion and strength. 

 Dan is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Brenda Dopson Shazier who will forever treasure his memory. His brother, Robert Shazier (Miami, Fl), Children- Dan  Shazier Jr (Orlando, Fl), Brandon Shazier (Altamonte Springs, Fl) Brittney Shazier (Chattanooga, TN)   as well as his two grandchildren, Elijah Shazier & Ezekiel Shazier (Bermuda) A Bonus Daughter, Angenette Aikens (Valdosta, Ga) 3 Bonus grandchildren, Quincy Barfield, Joshuana Barfield, Giselle Barfield, (Valdosta, Ga) and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. 

A memorial to honor and celebrate Dan's life will be held on: Friday December 6, 2024, at 6:00 pm

The Big House was not just a community to Dan--it felt like family. He formed meaningful connections with so many individuals there, and his contributions to basketball and the lives he touched will always be remembered. In his honor, The Big House is proud to host a memorial service to celebrate his life and the lasting impact he had on everyone who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, his wife kindly request cards that she can read and treasure.  May Dan rest in peace, free from pain and may his memory bring comfort and solace to all who mourn his passing.
