Background

Everyone's friend, DK, passed from this life suddenly late last week. He leaves behind is wife, best friend, high school sweetheart, Jennifer, and their four children. We would like to offer our love and support to Jennifer by donating funds that she can use for DK's recent medical bills, his funeral, and/or for the kids.

From Jennifer:
Thank you to all have been helping the kids and I survive this past week. It has been nothing less than brutal. Your kind words and acts of service have been our lifeline. I have not responded to many of you who shared on FB, but please know that I was reading your words and your prayers and they were a blessing.

As many of you know, Dan was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, psoriatic arthritis, 3 years ago. His case was particularly severe and aggressive and had not responded very well to any of the treatments that had been tried so far. Over the past year, the arthritis began to attack his spine. Every month brought more pain and more difficulty for him to do the things he enjoyed. Despite this, he continued to work full time and to attend almost every single activity that our kids participated in. And he did it with a positive attitude and always with hope that things would get better with each new treatment plan. He was particularly looking forward to a spinal surgery in June that would hopefully alleviate some of the progressing pain and nerve issues. Like most autoimmune diseases, psoriatric arthritis is not fatal. It is painful, exhausting and debilitating in some cases, but most people live with it for 20, 30, even 40 years.

A few days before he died, Dan was in the hospital with a GI bleed that was determined to be caused by the ibuprofen he had been taking to help with his back pain. Every other test was normal, and after getting a couple of much needed blood transfusions and a quick repair of the bleed in his colon, he was back home Thursday afternoon. I share this because I know there are some who think that his death was related to his recent hospital stay. It was not. Friday night, he stayed up much later than usual, waiting for Maya and I to get home from her track meet. We brought him his favorite fast food meal--soft tacos from Taco Bell--minus lettuce, plus sour cream. One of his favorite movies was on TV, "I Can Only Imagine". He went to bed before it was over, planning to try to watch the rest on his phone while he fell asleep. I found him a short time later. He had suffered a massive and fatal heart attack. It was instant and painless for him. For us, not so much. We miss him with all of our hearts and souls. He was our constant encourager and the comic relief in every situation. We will miss everything about him. Except the constant pain. We are thankful he is now in the presence of Jesus, where he is WHOLE and PAIN FREE and full of ENERGY, LIFE, LOVE, and LAUGHTER. We cannot wait to see him again! And God has already been so good to give us little reminders that he's got us and he's definitely got Dan.
