Daminabo's obituary
With deeply felt sorrow, we announce the passing of Daminabo (Damin Amos) Anji Igonikon, known affectionately to his wife as "Nabo," on the 26th of June 2024. Born on the 29th of October, 1946, Daminabo spent 77 remarkable years on earth touching the lives of many with his reserved, yet earnest, generous, and supportive personality.
Daminabo was born in Buguma, Rivers State, Nigeria, one of four brothers and one sister, to Chief and Madam Anji and Noriah Igonikon of the Tariah Compound. His life journey began as a student at the St. Savior's Anglican Church for primary school in Buguma. After becoming known as a bright and hardworking youngster, he went to live with an uncle in Lagos, Nigeria around 1954, as was the custom during that time to help young relatives find opportunity. Daminabo grew up to realize several accomplishments, like becoming a member of the British Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and employment as a clerk at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. Here, Daminabo exhibited his skillsets in typing and shorthand for several years, while obtaining further education and certifications that would earn him acceptance as a student in the United States at Fayetteville Technical Institute, North Carolina.
During all these achievements, Daminabo nurtured a relationship with his best friend, who would become his wife and life companion, Ms. Caroline Crawford Osima George, joining in marriage on December 15, 1973 at the First Baptist Church, Broad Street, Lagos, Nigeria. Together they made a life in the United States, both attending college while caring for their only child and daughter, McNoriah Joy. Daminabo would go on to earn a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration and a Master's of Science in Political Science.
While a devoted husband and father, he became an esteemed entrepreneur who built and successfully operated five small businesses over twenty-five years. His "D'Lynns Stores" were opened in the Liberty Heights, West Forest Park, Windsor Mill and Gwynn Oak communities of Baltimore, Maryland. His success at entrepreneurship demonstrated the virtues of perseverance to those with whom he crossed paths. He worked very hard and served these communities with respect and care, selling groceries, snacks, candies and other items for daily living. His customers experienced him as a one-of-a-kind man who loved them in his own humble way.
Among Daminabo’s many life lessons, "taking care of the most important people in your life," stands out as a testament to his priorities and values. His life served as evidence of the power of determination, resilience, and unending love for family. Though he was renowned for his professional accomplishments, Daminabo's legacy lies in the humble and quiet life he led. His memory will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him and experienced his kindness. He is survived by his loving wife, Caroline Lynn Igonikon, and daughter, McNoriah Joy Igonikon, who remain as his beacons of light.
The funeral service to celebrate the extraordinary life of Daminabo Damin Amos Igonikon will take place on August 2, 2024, 10:30 AM at Christian Life Church in Baltimore, Maryland. His burial will follow shortly thereafter at Woodlawn Cemetery & Chapel. Sincere condolences are also extended to his entire family across the globe, in the United States and Nigeria, sharing in their grief during this difficult time with love.
