Damian's obituary
Damian Daniel Shades, 25, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on April 9, 2026. He was born on November 6, 2000, in Willoughby, Ohio.
Damian lived a life shaped by creativity, music, and deep emotional connection. He was drawn to sound, to meaning, and to the kind of music that says the things words alone sometimes cannot. Artists like Twenty One Pilots and Blink-182 weren’t just bands to him—they were part of how he processed the world, how he expressed himself, and how he connected with others.
From the very beginning, Damian had a gentle, steady presence. As a baby, he was content simply being close—easygoing, observant, and deeply connected to his mom. That closeness never faded; it evolved into a bond built on trust, shared experiences, and unwavering support.
As he grew, Damian stepped into his identity with quiet strength. He was sensitive, thoughtful, and authentic in a way that left a lasting impression on the people around him. He didn’t just exist in the world—he felt it, deeply. And that depth showed in his music, his relationships, and the way he experienced life.
He had a strong circle around him—people who showed up, who stayed, and who loved him without hesitation. His stepfather, Jay, was a consistent and meaningful presence in his life for nearly a decade. Their connection, especially through music, was something special—built in everyday moments, shared interests, and mutual respect.
Damian also shared a close bond with his brother, Jonathan, and was surrounded by extended family who remained nearby and present throughout his life. Whether it was helping him through transitions, showing up when it mattered, or simply being there, he had people who cared deeply for him.
He found joy in music, in connection, and in the moments that felt real and unfiltered. He could be funny, introspective, and incredibly genuine, all at once. Those who knew him will remember his individuality, his creativity, and the way he made space for others just by being himself.
In his final moments, Damian was surrounded by love. His mom and Jay were with him, holding him, speaking to him, and reminding him how deeply he was loved. He was not alone.
He is survived by his mother, Lacey Belen; his stepfather, Jay Belen; his brother, Jonathan Sawyer; his step-siblings, Luna and Mason Belen; his maternal grandparents, Sue and Terry Sawyer; and his aunt, Kayla Sawyer, along with extended family and friends who loved him.
He will always be remembered for who he truly was and for the love that will always surround him. His presence will continue to be felt: in music, in memories, and in the lives of those who carry him forward.
