Dallas "Rena"'s obituary

Dallas “Rena” McCaslin, 61, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2022, in the comfort of her home.

Born July 27, 1960, in San Bernardino, California, she was the daughter of Dallas and Patsy (Darnell) Westhusin. Her father passed away before she was born, and Rena was raised in the Wichita area by her mother and dad, Joe Allen. She graduated from Campus High School in 1978 and married Jeff Elliott the same year. The couple lived in North Carolina, Louisiana, and Hawaii while Jeff served in the Coast Guard. They had a daughter, Jennifer, and later divorced.

Rena worked in Human Resources and office management for many years. Her last workplace was at GKN in Wellington.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth McCaslin, Jr. on October 20, 1999, in Winfield where they filled their home with love, music, good food, game nights, beloved dogs, and a ton of laughter.

She loved raising butterflies and gardening. She perpetually denied her skillful green thumb and unlimited creativity, but could turn limited resources into beautiful things with ease. She loved playing Spades, hosting holiday get-togethers, watching birds visit her feeders, soaking up sun on her boat, and spoiling her dogs. Her family was her truest passion, though. She especially loved spending time with her late mother and her grandchildren.

Rena was thoughtful, determined, resilient, competitive, inquisitive, and kind. She made people laugh, rebuffed ultimatums, championed the underdog, and was a most comforting caretaker. In Rena’s final days, her family was able to return the gestures of caretaking by recalling all of the experiences Rena had provided for them in times of need.

Her family includes her husband, Kenneth McCaslin, Jr. of Winfield; her daughter, Jennifer Bruno (George) of Garner, NC; her bonus children, Katie Divine (Taylor Briggs) of DeSoto, KS, Curtis McCaslin of Midland, TX, and Rayden Staton of Winfield; her mother-in law, A-Belle McCaslin of Winfield; her sister-in-law, Suzi Masem (Jim) of Winfield; her 12 grandchildren; her siblings Teresa Byers (Mitch) of Wichita, JoAnn Dodson (Rex) of Rogers, AR, and Mark Allen (Debbie) of Zenda, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rena was preceded in death by her biological father, Dallas Westhusin, her mother Patsy, her dad, Joe Allen, a bonus daughter Christina Hembree, and siblings, Eddie Allen (Candy), Geraldine Patrick (Randy), Steve Allen, and Teresa Raley.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life at Island Park on June 25th.

In lieu of flowers, the family will collect donations to establish a public Memorial Pollinator Garden in Rena’s name. Leftover donations will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Kindred Hospice in Winfield, KS. Contributions may be made through this site, or payments via check or money order may be made to Miles Funeral Services in Winfield, KS.
