Dale's obituary
Dale Leon Byers
June 30, 1939 – March 25, 2026
Dale Leon Byers, a lifelong resident of Santa Barbara, passed away on March 25, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Dale graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1957. He lived a life defined by hard work, service, craftsmanship, and a deep love for the outdoors. During the Vietnam War, he proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, reflecting his quiet strength and enduring sense of duty.
In 1962, Dale married the love of his life, Ethel Mae, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned more than six decades. She preceded him in death in 2024.
Dale spent over 40 years with General Telephone and Electric, remaining loyal through the company’s many transitions. His strong work ethics and reliability were hallmarks of both his career and his character.
A true craftsman, Dale, maintained a full workshop where he built and created throughout his life. He was an avid enthusiast of radio-controlled planes and boats, meticulously designing and constructing them by hand. An accomplished woodworker, he fashioned everything from reptile aquariums to a handcrafted hope chest for his wife, along with countless projects for the family home.
Dale’s love of the outdoors began early through Boy Scouts, founded locally by his father. He later shared his knowledge by teaching his children sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and water safety. He spent many years fishing, sailing, and surfing along the Santa Barbara coast, and enjoyed hunting and archery.
Above all, Dale will be remembered for his gentle nature, kindness, and steady presence. He is survived by his children, Rikki Byers and husband John, Dan Byers and wife Jeanine, Andrea Staples and husband Paul, and his grandchildren, Shane, Devon, and Dylan Byers. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
