D. Craig's obituary
Dr. Donald Craig Allred, 73, of Prescott, AZ, passed away on February 15, 2024 after a brief illness.
Craig was born on February 16, 1950 to parents Donald Lee Allred and Barbara Benson Allred in Salt Lake City, UT. He was a graduate of the University of Utah medical school and completed his residency in Anatomic Pathology and a fellowship in Immunopathology at the University of Connecticut. The majority of Craig's medical career focused on breast cancer research. He was a tenured professor at University of Texas Health Science Center (San Antonio, TX), Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX), and Washington University St. Louis School of Medicine (St. Louis, MO). Craig is a named author of at least 50 medical texts and 150 peer-reviewed articles. He is the namesake for the Allred Score, an industry standard method for scoring estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor immunohistochemistry markers--a diagnostic tool used in breast cancer research to determine the efficacy of possible hormonal therapies.
An avid hobbyist and collector, Craig's passions were wide-ranging and consuming. From karate and bodybuilding in his youth, to saltwater flyfishing and hydroponic gardening in middle age, to archery, rock hunting and digital painting in retirement, Craig's curiosity and creativity was earnestly displayed in his home and generously shared with family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Oakley Allred Madan, grandson Wren Maxell Madan, brothers Bradley Jay Allred of Holmen, WI and Mitchell Tyler Allred of West Valley City, UT, and Bella, the chubby boarder collie. Per his request, no funeral was planned, though a small cluster of family and neighbors gathered at his home to raise a glass of Diet Coke and Jim Beam in his honor.
