Background
Cynthia was a 39 year old, mother of 4 when she was strangled by Brandon Smith on March 4, 2019 in Tulsa. Cynthia wasn’t from Tulsa and only knew her family and her coworkers in town. When she was murdered, her family took her body back to California and we didn’t get to say goodbye to her. There isn’t a grave or a memorial for anyone to visit in Oklahoma. We don’t want Tulsa to forget her.
Buck Atoms is centrally located between Cynthia’s work and her home. Our goal is to have a brick dedicated to Cynthia’s memory at this Tulsa landmark. The brick’s cost is $150 and if we go over this goal, we would like to donate any proceeds to DVIS in Cynthia’s name. Installation is expected to be in late March.
Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Inc. DVIS, a Tulsa Area United Way agency, is the only nonprofit agency in Tulsa, Okla., and the surrounding communities to provide comprehensive intervention and prevention services to men, women and, children affected by domestic and sexual violence. The DVIS mission is to rebuild lives affected by domestic violence and sexual assault through advocacy, shelter, counseling, and education.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors (e.g. slapping, shoving, pushing) and in some cases might not be considered "domestic violence."
1/4 of women worldwide will experience domestic/dating violence in their lifetime. Women between the ages of 20 to 24 are at greatest risk of becoming victims of domestic violence.
1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.
50% of all women who are murdered in this country are killed by a boyfriend or husband.
One out of every three pregnant women is battered.
According to the CDC, health-related costs of intimate partner violence against women exceeds $5.8 billion each year. Contribute
