Coralie June (Gerlitz) Hurst obituary: September 27, 1943-January 15, 2023
Coralie June (Gerlitz) Hurst, 79, of Tempe, AZ, passed away on January 15, 2023, at Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix, Arizona, surrounded by close friends.
Coralie was born on September 27, 1943, in Berkley, CA, to Reuben Arthur Gerliz & Ella (Albus) Gerlitz.
Coralie grew up in Springfield, Ohio, where she was recognized and received honors for her musical talent playing violin as concertmaster of the Springfield Youth Symphony and high school orchestra and then graduated in 1961 from Springfield South High School. Coralie continued her musical education at Ohio State University where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree under the guidance of George Hardesty and a Master of Music degree from Eastman School of music under the tutelage of Carroll Glenn.
Coralie continued her musical career playing in the New Jersey, Richmond (VA) & Kansas City symphonies. She moved to Arizona in 1985 where she performed with the Arizona Opera orchestra & was a sought-after freelance musician. She also taught music in the Mesa, AZ, schools for nearly 30 years.
After retiring, Coralie’s passion for the underserved community led her to teach ESL in Guadalupe, AZ.
Coralie’s favorite hobbies included cooking, hiking, supporting animal rescue & a love of crafts, particularly taking desert plant discards & turning them into works of art. You could see her many beautiful creations throughout her home, highlighted with her most gorgeous dining table she crafted from a saguaro remnant.
Coralie was preceded in death by her father, Reuben Arthur Gerlitz on September 13, 1968, in Ohio, and her mother, Ella Gerlitz on June 9, 2017, in Manden, North Dakota.
Coralie is survived by her sister Ellen Marie Gerlitz of Portland, Maine.
A private memorial service was held on February 20, 2023 where her life was celebrated by her friends.
