Cookie's obituary

We don’t know exactly where or when Cookie’s life started, we just know when it started with us.

Why Cookie was “The One” that day at the shelter? I can’t say. Was she trying to get your attention when you walked by? Was she playful? Was she happy to see you? Not really. She just laid on the concrete and seemed very indifferent to us being there, but there was something that set her apart from the rest and she came home with us.

At the time we didn’t know much about dog behavior really. On the way home we both remarked, “Wow, that’s a big mouth!”. We soon realized she had a big heart as well.

Her indifference at the shelter was because she had shut down. For the first couple of weeks she was just a shell, even afraid to go up stairs. Slowly she started to open up. Soon enough you could see a sparkle in her eyes and Cookie was going to do whatever Cookie wanted to do! That was typically a mission to find the most comfortable place to nap, even better if it was off limits!

Really she was a clown at heart and had a way making you laugh whenever she was in the room. A true creature of contradiction, one that could be ready for a walk or a cuddling-nap marathon at moments notice, and greet either with equal enthusiasm.

Over the years we met so many good people through Cookie, professionals in all dog related fields and random strangers who stopped to meet Cookie in the street. She loved everyone.

Occasionally we encountered people who made assumptions based on uneducated stereotypes. One even bold enough to share her unsolicited opinions, but quickly realized, just like in nature, she should be more afraid of the mother bear than the cub!

That did not define her. Cookie greeted everyone the same, happy energy eager to see who you are and be petted. Never happier than spending all day napping cuddling and licking your face.

All of god’s creatures are a gift;
Cookie’s gift to us is joy. We don’t know how Cookie’s story started, but it feels like her story ended chapters too soon. She was my soulmate, when she left she took a piece of my heart. The chapters of the past are happy memories that live with us forever.
