Background
Consuelo Valdez Alvarez lived 106 years rooted in faith, family, and a deep love for her family, friends, and spiritual community. She was a woman who prayed five times a day, who welcomed dozens of family members to live with her in her apartment on 84th Street when they needed a place to stay, and whose prayers for her loved ones were infinite.
In that spirit, we have chosen a few causes that reflect what she stood for — feeding the hungry (WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN), protecting the dignity of immigrants like our family through the Catholic network (CATHOLIC LEGAL IMMIGRATION NETWORK), and uplifting working Filipino New Yorkers (DAMAYAN MIGRANT WORKERS ASSOCIATION).
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation to any of these charities, or, towards your own church or charity, in her name. No amount is too small. 💐🕯️
🍽️ World Central Kitchen — founded by Chef José Andrés, WCK provides meals to people affected by humanitarian crises and disasters around the world.
✝️ Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC) — the largest Catholic nonprofit in the U.S. dedicated to protecting the legal rights and dignity of immigrants, rooted in the Gospel call to welcome the stranger.
🇵🇭 Damayan Migrant Workers Association — a NYC-based grassroots organization serving and empowering Filipino migrant workers, especially domestic workers and labor trafficking survivors.
🙏 Your own church or charity — you are also welcome to donate to a cause or community that is meaningful to you in Consuelo's honor. If you do, please let a family member know the name of the organization — we would love to hear about the causes her memory inspired.
