In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to help ease expenses in these strange times.

Background

My mother always stated that she never wanted a large or somber gathering when she passed, and it seems with with the recent activities in the world, that her wishes are granting themselves.

Throughout the course of my mom’s battle with cancer, she had made arrangements and stated that she was donating her remains to science (specifically a facility in Virginia), however, in her final week earthside, she changed her mind. Although we are happy about her decision for cremation in lieu of donation, we were not prepared for the expense required. Heck, we weren’t prepared for any of it, hope is funny that way.

With recent state mandates due to Covid19 effecting our employment and ability to gather together, like so many others worldwide, the scenario lends itself an almost comical timing. As gig and hospitality workers, we are dealing with empty job schedules and an extremely tight budget. Lord help us if we cry away the toilet paper stash (forgive my propensity for jokes, it’s how I cope and I’m sure you all can relate to the great TP apocalypse of 2020).

In light of this all, we are unable to arrange formal services at this time, however, we hope to celebrate her life on her birthday May 9th (should the world reopen by then) with a wonderful party for friends and family. In the mean time, we are requesting that in lieu of flowers, cards, or the expenses you may have used to attend a service, you consider a donation. We would love to use the funds for her cremation and perhaps an intimate gathering of our close family in Monterey, to return her to the sea that she loved so much.

We know you would all love to surround us with your presence and love during this, and we ache that timing simply won’t allow for such a gathering as of yet, so we humbly thank you for considering our request. Any additional monetary gifts we receive above the cost of her final rest will assist my dad with essentials so that we can make sure he stays inside and safe like he’s supposed to during this unknown period of quarantine (... and pray the masses don’t start hoarding coffee).

We are so grateful for you all, and we appreciate the outpouring of supportive words we have received. Sending you genuine love and virtual hugs.
