Colleen's obituary
Colleen Dee Hughes, 65, passed peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, July 29th. Colleen, Dee-Dee as she was affectionately known, was born in Marshall, Michigan on October 2, 1957. She moved with her parents, both Active Air Force, to Arizona when she was 7 years old. She grew up in Scottsdale and attended public school, followed by after school clubs and activities. After high school graduation in 1976, Dee-Dee moved to Washington, DC and worked at the US Department of Agriculture. During this period she met and married the love of her life William Hughes in Washington, DC on December 7, 1982. Together, they moved back to Michigan as Dee-Dee had always missed her home state. Dee-Dee was quick to smile and to laugh. She was thrilled to be with family and friends. Her Chihuahua, Ginger, was an ever-present and loving side-kick. Her rose garden was a passion, which continued to bring her daily joy. They are yet blooming in her front yard today.
She is predeceased by her parents: Dee Jonah McCarter and Betty McCarter and brother John Dennis McCarter. Surviving are her children: Kellen Jonah Hughes(Vallejo, California), and Ann Marie Hughes (Marshall, MI). Her husband: William Hughes (Marshall, MI). Her sisters: Susan Scarla and Cathy Galas (both Mesa, AZ). Her nieces and nephews: Kiki Wilkinson (Tempe, AZ), George Aris Scarla, Nicholas Dee Scarla, and Stephanie Ann Scarla (all of Mesa, AZ).
Her family is having a private celebration of the long life of a delightful wife, mother, aunt, and friend. The family will be spreading her ashes on the lake she grew up on in Marshall, Michigan. The family appreciates and respectfully requests privacy and understanding during this time of loss.
It was Dee-Dee’s desire to continue living. Please make donations in Dee-Dee’s honor to the Veterans Hospital in Detroit, Michigan
