Cody Joseph Vostad was born 9/25/1989 to Mike and Rhonda Vostad in Canton, SD. He graduated from Canton High School and went on to attend the School of Mines where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Cody moved to Kentucky for work and met his wife Tara, they welcomed their beautiful boy Jackson Clay in 2020. They divorced in 2023.

For those who knew Cody well, you were truly blessed. Cody was quiet, generous, kind and always there to help anyone in need. His wide smile could light up a room. He was special. He loved to play golf with his dad Mike, loved to fish and hunt and loved to spend time with his beloved son Jackson. Cody was determined - at just 18 years old, he traveled to Scotland and Ireland to visit his sister Maeghan. While there, he decided that it was his day to play on the world-renowned St. Andrews golf course. Without a word, Cody took a train from Edinburgh to St. Andrews on his own, made friends with a club member at the private club house and played the whole course. He proudly brought back his scorecard to show his dad, Mike.

Cody was an accomplished engineer, both at work and at home. Whenever he came home to visit his mom, we would joke we needed to hide the chainsaw so he didn’t just tear the place down and build everything new. He deeply loved the outdoors. Hunting and fishing with his dad, family and friends was one of his favorite pastimes. Oh the stories they could tell. Cody loved trucks and cars as well, he always seemed to have a car project in the shed waiting to see the road again. Although South Dakota is not known for its lakes, he loved being on the water and enjoyed taking his boat out to enjoy the sun and hang out with friends and family (most likely without any sunscreen). He was a dedicated Packers fan, and was able to attend a few games. Sunday football games were the most heated when the Bears and Packers played, as his brother-in-law Kevin is a Bears fan & the game chatter was endlessly entertaining. He taught all of his nephews and nieces to fish, and did it with a gentle hand and kind touch. His son Jackson Clay was his world, and he was a great dad.

Last year, in March, Cody narrowly survived a horrific head on car crash and never fully recovered financially or physically. The burden of the physical pain and stress of medical debt wore him down in secret, and he lost his battle to mental illness on February 23, 2024. Those who knew him and loved him miss him every day, every single minute. His laughter and his generous spirit will live on in each of us who were blessed to call him friend.

Cody is preceded in death by his dad Mike Vostad. He is survived by his mom Rhonda Vostad, brother Matt Vostad, sisters Andrea (Ray) Gleason (Kevin Gleason), Maeghan (Ray) Orton (Reg Orton), and son Jackson Clay Vostad; as well as his nieces Marlow Gleason & Vivian Gleason and nephews Findlay Orton and Tobias Orton.

To those who want to join Cody's celebration of life, we will meet to grieve and share stories of Cody’s life together at Grand Valley Church in Canton on April 6th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to a college fund for his son Jackson Clay. Cody was not a flower guy, but he did love his little boy. It’s our deepest wish now is to help Jackson remember Cody. Please send gifts and share memories and photos of Cody here. Alternately, contact the Farmers State Bank in Canton and request Cody Vostad (Rhonda Vostad) memorial for Jackson Vostad. We will create a trust fund with whatever gifts are given for Jackson for his future education, and bind a book with stories of memories with Cody that we will continuously share with Jackson so he can know what an amazing man his daddy was.
