Cliff's obituary
Clifton H. Hutchinson Jr., Cliff to those who knew him and loved him, died Friday February 10, 2023 in Tyler, Texas at the age of 75 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Cliff is survived by his wife Catherine, son Clifton H. Hutchinson III, daughter Hope Sparks and husband Steve, brother Charles Hutchinson and wife Rebecca, sister Susan Hutchinson and husband Doug Paul, and numerous in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Clifton and Bernice Hutchinson and sister Gail Holloman.
Cliff was well-travelled by the time he was 15, having lived and attended school internationally in Tripoli, Libya and Calgary, Canada. He started his career in the Houston area and was well-known in the wine and private club industries. In the later years of his career, he specialized in rehabilitating aging country clubs with a focus on water management and conservation. He was a dedicated supporter of many other environmental and social issues throughout his lifetime.
Cliff and Catherine recently moved back to Texas after extended periods in Colorado and California, making the most of their time in these states by traveling extensively and enjoying local scenery, food, and wines. Cliff loved dogs (and dogs loved Cliff), and often they would have a companion on their travels. Their dog Paco seldom left Cliff’s side in his last weeks.
Cliff loved to read and learn new things, and he was never afraid to wade into a discussion, regardless of the topic. He had many interesting and animated conversations sitting on the back deck looking out at the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels, glass of wine in hand and Paco at his feet, surrounded by family who may or may not have shared his opinion but were always willing to talk about it!
If you would like to remember Cliff, please consider donating to your local animal shelter in Cliff’s memory. Many of Cliff’s dogs were shelter dogs and he and Catherine changed their lives by adopting them.
