Cleo is lovingly remembered by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Ray Shera (Plattsmouth NE), Joe Shera (Hannah & Charlie), Melissa Foust (Jaxson & Jorryn); Dan & Donna Leaman (Plattsmouth NE), Carissa & Jeff Jones (Samantha & Hailey), Tiffany & Matt Moore (Tyler), Miranda & Andrew Iwen (Addison); Belinda & Bob Wills (Plattsmouth NE), Jared Rye, Breanna & Josh DeWitt (Hudson & Everlee), Stephen Rye (Ryan); Bill & Kim Snitker (Mason City IA), Callie & Mike Schiffer, Abbey Snitker; Ron Snitker & Doug Alexander (Nashville TN). She is preceded in death by her parents, Marvin & Phyllis Cross; brother, Cecil (Joanne Cross); and daughters Cindy Shera and Doreen Leaman.
Cleo was born in Charles City, Iowa at her Aunt Hattie’s house (father’s sister) on May 8, 1934. She grew up on her parent’s farm in Colwell, Iowa. Her family moved to Charles City when she was eleven years old. She graduated from Charles City High School and married Dale Leaman in 1951 at age 17. Dale joined the service and they relocated to Florida. After Dale’s tenure with the service, they returned to Charles City and Cleo worked for Weinberger Drug Store. After they divorced she moved to Washington State with her two children, Cindy and Dan. She returned to Charles City and was employed at White Farm.
She married Lyle Snitker in Charles City, Iowa and they had three children: Belinda “Suz”, Lyle “Bill”, and Ron. They lived in Logan, Iowa in the early 70s for five years before returning to Charles City. After divorcing Lyle, Cleo moved to Nebraska in 1991 for a job at the Louisville Care Center and to be close to family.
Cleo enjoyed her job as a senior care center activity coordinator as well as supporting and chaperoning her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids’ school activities. She was an avid volunteer and a den mother for Boy Scouts and a troop leader for Girl Scouts. She loved music and played violin and bass violin in high school. She was an avid reader and a skilled crafter. In recent years, she loved spending time with her family, getting out and about, and dining out.
A remembrance reception will be held at the Louisville Care Center (Louisville NE) on March 12th from 2:30 to 4 pm. A larger celebration of Cleo’s life and interment will take place in Charles City, Iowa at a later date. Memorial donations may be made via check to Floyd County Veterans Memorial (Box 123, Charles City, Iowa 50616, 641-228-1850.)
