Clayton's obituary

It is with heavy hearts we join with friends and family in mourning the death of the Reverend Dr. Clayton Cobb who unexpectedly passed from this life to more life with God on Saturday, January 2. Clayton had been recently hospitalized with pancreatitis a few days before this and was looking forward to his discharge. Complications arose during which his heart stopped, and they could not revive him.

Clayton was born on November 7, 1953 to Howard and Adolphine Cobb in Fort McCallum, Louisiana. His schooling included attending Memphis State, UCLA, Fuller Theological Seminary and San Francisco Theological Seminary. Clayton was passionate about the Church, and devoted his life to ministry. He was ordained by San Francisco Presbytery on July 23, 1978. He served three churches during his ministry, the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church as Associate Pastor/Acting Head of Staff (7/78 – 9/90); the Presbyterian Church of Novato as Pastor (10/90 – 9/94); and St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, Ranchos Palos Verdes as Pastor for 17 years. In September 2011, Clayton became the Board of Pensions’ Church Consultant for the churches and presbyteries in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and Hawaii until his retirement in October 2019.

Clayton was active in the community, serving on the Board of Managers of the San Pedro & Peninsula YMCA. He was one of the key leaders in the “Dawn Unity Group,” an interfaith community group that presented 4 programs a year to promote interfaith understanding and dialogue. More than 20 years ago, he initiated the “South Bay National Day of Prayer Breakfast” for the community which he hosted for many years as an annual event.

Throughout his ministry and community service, Clayton was a caring pastor with an easy communication style and a wise counselor with a genuine desire to help others. He was friendly, fun, and witty one-on-one or in a group. Always with a sense of humility, Clayton used his gifts of communication, relationship, strategic thinking, and encouraging generosity in all his service. He understood life to be fundamentally relational and that it is our relationship with God through Jesus Christ that blesses and guides us in our relationships with one another. Anyone who met Clayton could expect to be greeted with a warm hug, kiss on the cheek and the greeting of “Hello, dear one”. His care and passion for people was tangible and felt by many. Clayton’s friends and family will miss him more than words can say.

Clayton’s other passions included playing music, running, cooking good food and quality time with family. His greatest joy was sharing any of these pastimes with close friends, his beloved wife Jeannie, and his children.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Jeannie Cobb, children Carly and Austin Cobb, Aunt Caroline Gregg, Cousin Daryle Currie, step-children Sarah Esswein and Peter Gothold and 5 grandchildren, who affectionately called him, “the Dude”.

We mourn the loss of our dear Clayton and we pray that God’s love will surround His family and friends with peace beyond all understanding. Clayton is with our Savior, Jesus Christ, in whose presence he now dwells. We await the day when we are all united again with all those we love.

Clayton and Jeannie just recently sold their home in San Pedro and moved into Monte Vista Grove Homes. Cards and letters may be sent to Jeannie Cobb, 2889 San Pasqual Street, Pasadena, CA, 91107.
