September 5, 1942 - October 3, 2024
It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of Dr. Claudia L. McCarty, DO, FAAO, who departed this world peacefully on October 3rd, 2024, at the age of 82, after a brief illness. Dr. McCarty's life was a testament to dedication, perseverance, and the healing power of osteopathic medicine.
Born with a passion for helping others, Claudia began her medical journey in 1972 as a physician's assistant. Her unwavering commitment to healthcare led her to pursue further education, graduating cum laude from the New York Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences. She then earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) in 1989, where she received the Award for Excellence in Osteopathic Principles and Practices.
Dr. McCarty's illustrious career spanned nearly four decades, during which she touched countless lives as an attending physician, instructor, emergency department physician, and family practice physician. Her roles included Associate Professor at the University of North Texas in Fort Worth and co-founder of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Associates in Syosset, New York. She also contributed significantly to the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.
A lifelong learner, Dr. McCarty earned additional master's degrees in Human Relations and Instructional Technology. Her dedication to osteopathic medicine was further exemplified by her service where she held a Fellowship in the American Academy of Osteopathy as well as serving on the Board of Governors and as its President.
Beyond her professional achievements, Claudia was a certified scuba diver and a water safety instructor, showcasing her diverse interests and zest for life. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a cherished colleague, mentor, and friend to many osteopathic medical students, residents, and attending physicians.
Dr. McCarty is survived by her daughter Keli Mason and husband David, grandchildren Charles (Tara) and Richard (Lexi) Mason; her son Steven McCarty and wife Elaine, and their children Sean (Lindsay) and Danielle McCarty. She also leaves behind her brother George Carpenter, beloved great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Claudia's legacy as a trailblazer in the medical field and a strong female role model will continue to inspire future generations. Her life exemplified the principle that one can achieve anything with determination and passion.
A Celebration of Life event will be held in Texas on December 7, 2024, as per Dr. McCarty's wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity supporting osteopathy and its students or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
Dr. Claudia L. McCarty's compassion, wisdom, and dedication to healing will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
