Clarence's obituary

Clarence Walter Weiss, 88, passed away February 7, 2020, in Atlanta. Born July 22, 1931, on the family farm in Cimarron, Kansas, the son of Carl and Anna (Lobmeyer) Weiss, Walt was the fourth of nine children. He had an independent spirit growing up but was always eager to help around the house, sharing the money he earned from his paper route so his siblings could go to the matinee. His heart for service led Walt to join the Catholic priesthood at 18, which took him to Washington D.C. to earn his Master’s in Social Work before returning to Dodge City to establish and lead the Catholic Social Services Organization. Walt was particularly proud of the organization’s work as a state-licensed adoption agency. His pilot’s license came in handy as he flew all over Kansas, uniting children with their families. His love for children extended to his many nieces and nephews, who remember him as one of their favorite uncles due to his humor and kindness.

In 1971, Walt left the priesthood to take a faculty position with the Georgetown University Hospital in D.C. There he met and married the love of his life, Paulette Hall. Their son Matt was born in 1979 before the family moved to Asheville, N.C., and later to Atlanta. Walt and Paulette loved to travel and were entrepreneurs, opening Chelsea’s Soap Garden in 1994. Walt was by Paulette’s side in 2017 when she passed away at home, and he never stopped missing her.

In addition to his wife, Walt was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Eileen Schinstock, Sister Beata (Lenore) Weiss, Jeanette Watson, Marilyn Cox, and Charles Weiss. He is survived by his brother Daniel Weiss and sister Marjorie Phillips, both of Kansas; his mother-in-law Lila Stansberry and sister-in-law Donna Monteath, both of Asheville; and son Matt Weiss (Anne Corbitt) of Atlanta. Other surviving family include Mark George and Polly Donoghue of Dublin, Ireland; Tanya and Danny Pittson of Lawrenceville; Chelsea, Chad, Camryn, and Tag Griffin of Oklahoma City; and Alex George of Paris, France.

"Grandmama’s House educates, informs and advocates for seniors living in Atlanta about governmental and philanthropic home repair programs in order to achieve the vision of seniors aging in place with dignity and pass their wealth onto the next generations to come. Their goal is to ensure seniors remain warm, safe and dry in their existing homes and remain an important thread in the fabric of their communities."
