Chris's obituary

In Loving Memory of Christopher Lee "Chris" Cunningham

(May 3, 1970 - December 24, 2023)

Chris, a longtime resident of Kirkland, WA, passed away on December 24, 2023, following a year-long battle with liver disease.

Born on May 3rd, 1970, to JoAnn (nee Gilmer) and H. Lee Cunningham in Seattle, WA, Chris embarked on a life filled with fun and excitement. After graduating from Newport High School in 1988, he later pursued his studies in business at the University of Washington. Throughout his career, Chris thrived in various roles within the sign-making and automotive industries, where his creativity and sales skills were evident. However, it was his role as the "Race Director" at Evergreen Speedway starting in 2011 that truly ignited his spirit. A year after Doug and Traci Hobbs purchased the track, Chris walked in and said “What can I do?” He ended up overseeing more than 200 events, including 25 on the "big track" 5/8 mile oval, Chris left an indelible mark on the racing community. His dedication and vision helped shape Evergreen Speedway into what it is today.

Beyond his professional and racing endeavors, Chris enjoyed the company of close friends and family. Whether it was indulging in his passion for poker, cherishing moments with his son Gavin, or simply spending time with dear friends, Chris lived life to the fullest.

Chris's love for racing was a lifelong affair, beginning with go-karts in his youth and culminating in his remarkable journey through the ranks, from mini-stocks to super-stocks to the prestigious NASCAR Northwest Tour. His impact on the PNW stockcar racing community was profound, earning him the respect and admiration of peers far and wide. He wouldn't have been who he was if it wasn't for the support and encouragement of his mom, his dad, his sponsors Brian and Melinda Moulaison, his crew chief Brian Estrin, all the fans, competitors, and of course friends.

Chris is survived by his mom, JoAnn, of Edmonds, and his sons, Orion Keeter of Austin, TX, and Gavin Cunningham of Kirkland, WA. He was preceded in death by his father, H. Lee Cunningham of Bellevue.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Chris will be held on Saturday, March 16th, at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the CC04 memorial fund at Ally Bank, dedicated to supporting Gavin upon his coming of age.  The account number is 2230233179
