Chris's obituary

Christopher “Chris” Gerrard Haney, was born May 11, 1965 in Peoria, IL and died November 11, 2024 at Mercy South Hospital in St. Louis, MO. His loving wife, Susan, was by his side. He is no longer suffering and in the loving arms of Jesus.

Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Kay Haney, biological father, Danny Hoskins Grooms, father, John David Haney, and siblings, Angie and Bryon Aberle.

Chris first married Zella Colp. He then married Susan Hurd on April 19, 2008. She survived. Also left to mourn his loss are son, Joshua Haney of TX, daughter, Natascha Haney of Harrisburg, IL, stepsons, Joshua (Hope Caudell) Vandeford of House Springs, MO, Anthony and Thomas Hendrix of Granite City, IL; grandchildren, Grayson and Reaghan; seven step grandchildren; step-mothers, Roberta Grooms, of Metamora, IL and Linda Haney of Fort Payne, AL; and siblings, Mark Haney of Tampa, FL, Sean (Traci) Haney of Du Quoin, IL, Jana Grooms of Sebring, FL, Brian (Erin) Grooms of Spring Bay, IL, and Kevin (Alecia) Haney of Marine City, MI. A host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive.

Chris loved animals, fishing and rock n roll music. Unfortunately, his life was fraught with isolation, trauma and addiction. For those reasons, Chris never understood and embraced his worth and how much he was truly loved. We all loved him dearly and prayed for his healing. Although we grieve, we know he is experiencing the love of God and is no longer in pain.

Chris has been cremated. A celebration of life will take place Saturday, May 10. We will begin at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria where we will lay ashes at his mother’s grave. We will continue at Avanti’s on Knoxville in Peoria where a room has been reserved A memorial fund to provide for his grandchildren’s education had been created. . Donations may also be made to GoFundMe, “Help Chris Haney’s Grandchildren Thrive.”  If you cannot afford to donate, we ask that you simply do an act of kindness in memory of Chris.
