Chris's obituary

Christopher H. Coulson, 83, of South Fork, Colorado died Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Denver Hospice. Born July 21, 1942 in Los Angeles, California and raised in Ventura, California.

A 1966 graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, Chris had a career in the mining industry that took him around the world consulting and advising on all types of precious metal mining operations in North & South America as well as Africa and Asia.

For many years this career kept him headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area where he developed interests in cooking, wine, and art. For many years he represented artists that depicted the American West in all types of styles, from the Realism of the American Cowboy to the Romanticism of the Landscape.

He married his long-time love, Penelope Perkins in 1984, and they lived happily in the Bay Area before moving to South Fork in 1996. There they ran a construction company for many years, drawing on Chris’s experience in engineering and cost estimating. Most of their projects were custom homes.

Penny preceded him in death in 2013. He spent many of the remaining years traveling to visit his son Eric who was in the US Foreign Service and spending time with his more local daughter and grandchildren.

A proud and longstanding member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years, Christopher valued tradition and fellowship. His enduring involvement with the Lodge speaks to a lifetime of service and camaraderie within his community.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hansell (Hank) Coulson and mother Dorothy Coulson (Langford) as well as his wife, Penny Coulson. He is survived by his son, Eric Coulson, daughter, Claudia Hiatt (Eckman), brother Greg Coulson, and grandchildren Austin, Cassandra, and Westley Hiatt. He also leaves behind one great-grandson, Waylon Hiatt.
