Christopher's obituary
Christopher Alan Bagley—beloved brother, friend, musician, and historian—passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, just days shy of his 63rd birthday.
Chris was born in Baltimore, MD on October 31, 1962 to Charles Augustus Bagley Sr. and Cynthia Alicia Bagley. An accomplished musician, Chris was introduced to music at the age of five when his father began teaching him piano. He went on to play trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone; however, his incredible skills as a pianist were recognized throughout the region at a young age. He performed throughout his school years both instrumentally and vocally with the school, All-City and All-State Bands and Choruses of Maryland.
Chris began serving in church leadership at the age of eight, following eagerly in his older brother’s footsteps. He accepted the Lord at Loch Raven United Methodist Church and remained active there through high school. Alongside his faith commitments, Chris excelled in athletics—particularly baseball and tennis—competing on both his high school and college tennis teams. His natural leadership and enthusiasm for service were evident early on: he was elected Class President his senior year (Northern High School, Class of 1980) and went on to serve two terms as Youth Mayor of Baltimore after graduation.
That same spirit of leadership extended beyond the church and civic arenas into the Junior Achievement organization. Beginning his involvement in ninth grade, Chris quickly rose through multiple student leadership positions in high school. After graduation, he continued to advance through several statewide and regional roles before serving as President and Chief Staff Officer of Junior Achievement in Wichita, Kansas (1996–1998). Through his work with Junior Achievement, Chris influenced and inspired countless high school students across the United States.
Throughout his career, Chris served numerous congregations as a minister of music, choir director, accompanist, and soloist, sharing his musical gifts in Baltimore, MD; Houston, TX; Wichita, KS; Chicago, IL; Richmond, VA; Oxford, NC; and Winston-Salem, NC. At the time of his passing, he was the Director of Music and Organist at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Graham, North Carolina. For ten years, Chris led their choir and congregation with passion, humor, and artistry; enriching the worship of all who knew him.
In addition to his ministry, Chris had a lifelong love of theater that led him to act in, direct, and musically direct more than 50 productions nationwide. Among his favorite roles were Hoke in Driving Miss Daisy, John the Baptist in Godspell, Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Nick in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
As President of United in Music, Inc., Chris was the creative force behind Moments With Paul, an original production honoring the life and legacy of the legendary artist and activist Paul Robeson. In the show, Chris portrayed Lawrence Brown—Robeson’s longtime friend and accompanist. Moments With Paul has been performed for more than a decade in theaters around the world, introducing audiences to Robeson’s enduring message of courage, dignity, and justice.
A passionate historian and genealogist, Chris devoted much of his life to researching the Bagley and Adams families, connecting distant relatives, and preserving the stories that knit generations together.
Known for his full bellowing laugh, sharp wit and delightfully snarky sense of humor, Chris filled every room with energy and warmth. He never missed a birthday and always remembered the small details of others’ lives. He loved deeply—and was deeply loved in return.
Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Augustus Bagley Sr. and Cynthia Alicia Bagley and is survived by his siblings, Charles “Chuck” (Michelle), Cheryl, and Cassandra; and by his cherished nieces and nephews, Brendon, Jessica, Britney, Brock, Christina, and Brygette “Jett”. He will also be remembered with great affection by numerous cousins and many dear friends.
Please join us in celebrating his life on Saturday afternoon, November 22, 2025, between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Together by Waverly Estate,1708 Main Street, Victoria, VA 23974. We will gather afterward for a brief interment at the Bagley Family Cemetery.
