Chris's obituary

In Loving Memory of Chris Mary Grant

December 12, 1962 – June 27, 2025

With full hearts we honor and celebrate the life of Chris Mary Grant, who passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025. Born on December 12, 1962, in the Bronx, New York, Chris was the beloved daughter of Betty and Curtis Grant, and was lovingly raised by her mother and stepfather John Becknell.

Chris was a proud daughter of Harlem and the Bronx, whose life reflected resilience, grace, and unwavering faith. She was a woman who gave wholeheartedly—to her family, her work, and her community. A graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, she would go on to receive a Business Degree. As a dedicated caregiver, Chris cared for others with warmth, patience, and strength. Her extraordinary work ethic spoke for itself—always showing up, always giving her best, always leading by example.

Chris was the mother of one daughter, Joann Grant, and the proud, adoring grandmother of Michael Grant-Shaw and Culvan James Barringer (“CJ”)—the lights of her life. Her love for them was boundless, and her legacy lives on through the lessons, laughter, and love she poured into them each day.

She brought joy everywhere she went. Chris had a vibrant sense of humor and a deep, infectious laugh that could fill a room and lift any heart. Whether during a game of Spades, a family gathering, or an everyday conversation, Chris found joy in connection. She lived with intention and radiated positivity, even in life’s hardest seasons.

Faith was her foundation. She lived by the words she often shared: “Trust in God.” That trust guided her path, sustained her spirit, and continues to strengthen those she leaves behind.

Chris was preceded in death by her beloved grandmothers, Agurtha Grant and Myrtle Comer, and her grandfathers, Able Grant and Oscar Hodges.

She is survived by her daughter Joann, her grandsons Michael and CJ, and a loving circle of siblings: Arlise, Loretta, Ingrid, John (Chip), Norman, and Gerard. She also leaves behind a stepmother Betty, cherished stepsisters and stepbrothers: Tenise, Deatrice, Monique, Christine, Lorina, Curtis, Paul, and Matthew—each of whom she held close in her heart.

Chris leaves behind a powerful legacy: of tireless love, joyful living, and enduring faith. We carry her light with us now, and always.

Rest in perfect peace, Chris. Your strength lives in us, your laughter echoes through us, and your love will never fade.
