I am so sorry that you have lost your beloved mother and I my Aunty.  I know that Aunty Chieko was always one of my mother's (Helen) favorites.  They shared a love of sewing and gardening.  My mother always admired Uncle Sho, Aunty Chieko and the wonderful family they created together.  It is inevitable that our life here ends, but I'm thankful for all the memories we have of our loved ones.
We feel so privileged to have known Chieko and Shoji for over 30 years----first in Anchorage, where Greg worked with Shoji at the National Weather Service Headquarters and where we often would also join them at their church for special events. We especially remember Chieko's wondering cooking, both at their church events and when we would visit them in Graham. She had such a deep love for God and for people and it was evident in all she did. What a beautiful family she raised too. You were always so supportive of mom and dad/grandpa and grandma and until the end she felt your love. Peace be to her memory!
I was honored to have known Chieko even for a very brief moment. I first met her on a Friday and she was raring to go and was excited to exercise, get better and go home. I next met her 4 days later and while she was easily winded and clearly struggled to even get out of bed, she was very determined to get up and move. I clearly remember her slapping her thighs and saying "uh I'm so weak!" and proceeding to sit up and do her own exercises with no prompting!
While it was the last time I would get to meet her, I was very honored and glad to have known her bright and fiery spirit. She loved being active and exercising and it clearly showed even when she was not feeling well.

Chieko was the first person to welcome me to church when I visited without my family. A year later, I was a pastor at that same church where Shoji and Chieko were committed to attending and being used by God. One day at her home, Chieko showed me her meticulous Bible studies in Japanese and another day both Takasugis showed me their beautiful garden which they poured so much love into. They were generous with starters for our garden and advice for how to tend to it.
Knowing Chieko was a blessing to our whole family.
They loved their family and they loved Jesus without limit.
Chieko was always such an encouragement to me and just about everyone she came into contact with. She had such care and concern and wanted to know personally how our family was doing. It was always such a blessing to see her on Sunday mornings. I have to say that for 20+ years our family never had to buy jam! She kept us stocked up with her raspberry jam. And believe you me we went through it especially when the boys were younger and I had three hungry boys to feed! Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were just the ticket.

I always knew Chico was praying for us. Through some dark days her prayers brought a lot of consolation. She has been greatly missed and no one has been able to take her place nor do I suspect that that is even possible.

Chieko always made everyone feel so welcome at church. She always had kind and encouraging things to say, and I loved getting to come by and visit her at her home here in Graham. No matter what went on in her life, she always looked to Jesus. We were blessed with some plants from Shoji that we still enjoy in our yard today, and they always remind me of this beautiful couple.

(This photo is from the GEBC church directory in the early 90’s) Shoji and Chieko were part of the Graham Emmanuel Baptist church family for over 30 years and they were both such wonderful examples of Jesus’ love for others. As dedicated greeters, they were often the first people you would meet when coming to church at GEBC and they would remember your name so that when arrived next Sunday, you were warmly greeted by name. Shoji and Chieko also enjoyed sharing the fruit and vegetables from their home and would often bring bags of homegrown goodies to share with people at church. Their love for Jesus was reflected in their loving, warm, friendly and generous attitudes and their presence at GEBC has been missed!
Chieko was an elegant, gracious and gentle soul who, so obviously, loved the Lord. It was a special moment when we greeted her at church every single Sunday. I am delighted for her that she is with her Heavenly Father and her dear Shoji.

Chieko and I attended Graham Emmanuel Baptist Church together for many years. She would always give my spirit a lift when we spoke. Always asking about my children and calling them by name long after they stopped attending GEBC. After one of her bouts with cancer she told me that she was blessed to have had cancer as it gave her so many opportunities to share Jesus with others. I loved looking at this memorial site and seeing pictures of Chieko in her younger days.
I first met Chieko-san when I helped the Franke Tobey Jones dining staff serve meals when our community first went into lockdown with the pandemic. Because of all the social-distancing restrictions in place to protect our community, we were only able to spend small snippets of time with each of the residents, she always brightened my day with her gentle and unassuming smile.

Her personality was warm and inviting but I really got to understand her personal strength when I learned that she had battled cancer on multiple occasions. The cancer may have weakened her body but her quiet courage in the face of such a ugly disease was amazing. She will be missed by so many of us, how blessed we were to have met her!
Tsukiko Moran - I have known Chieko for over 20 years. I first met her when I attended Bible study at her home. Over the years, she would call me and pray for me and my family. During the summer season, she and her husband would come by my home and drop off fruits and vegetables from their garden. Chieko was always very kind and thoughtful and I will miss our conversations very much. May she rest in peace.

I work at the senior community that Chieko called home for the last couple years. I am one of the very fortunate ones here. I saw Chieko often and even opened the entry doors when Ron Scott and Jay Schilling came to visit with their guitar in early March 2020. Chieko never asked for much. She was so precious sitting in our solarium and doing her seated exercises. Christine was a loving daughter and did so much to make Chieko happy. Like installing an air conditioner in her apartment and venting it through the window. Both amazing ladies. I will miss Chieko but I have fond memories and some sentimental items that make me smile everyday.

Shoji and Chieko have a special place in our family’s memory as they were the first people we met when we visited GEBC for the first time. They both were so kind and generous and always pointed people to the gospel of Jesus Christ! We hadn’t seen Chieko in several months at church (GEBC), so my buddy Ron Scott and I took some time to go visit her near Pt. Defiance at her apartment. (This was March of 2020, just before the lockdowns were put into place because of the Covid virus) . It was so wonderful to spend time with her catching up on how she was doing and some of the things at church. I brought my guitar and we sang a few worship songs together. I remember that she really sang out when “The Old Rugged Cross” was played. I believe she said that was one of her favorites. We also shared in communion together. What a special time! She will be missed here on earth but we know she’s home with Jesus, her Savior & Lord, for eternity!

To the family of Chieko Takasugi,
Thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of her life here at Franke Tobey Jones. I will always remember her for her grace and kindness. She was always composed and put on a good face no matter what was going on in her life.
Chieko was a warrior battling her health, but never would you see the pain she might have been going through.
I hope you find comfort knowing that she was loved and cared for by the staff and residents who had the honor of knowing her.

Deepest condolences,
Michelle Olafson
