We did lots of fun things together. Chooch unknowingly opened up many volunteer and teaching opportunities for me, especially, for the groups that involve people with disability. This is just one out of thousand things she brought challenges and purposes into my life. — with Chooch and mom

Chooch's passing is difficult because I feel that she passed away before her time. It is not yet a year since her passing, but it is just over a year since I last saw my sister alive and well and the passage of time is staggering.

It's a very hot summer as I write this and it reminds me of growing up together. We'd spend time going to the pool together, or if it was really really hot (like now), we'd hole up inside until it cooled off. At times like those, we could rely on our stash of library books or old movies. And we usually had cold watermelon in the fridge. The taste of cold watermelon on a summer day will always remind me of that time.

Today I am thinking of her and remembering that she loved to share whatever she had.  She was always excited at the idea of someone coming over to hang out. Even better if she had some kind of baked treat she had just helped to make. The important thing, though, was just to have quality time with people. You didn't have to say or do much- she was happy to plop down with a book as long as there was someone to share time and space with.

Best of all was when the cat would join in. The cat could always brighten our day, but no one seemed to cherish- or talk about- our furry friend as much Chooch. Now we have Moji who is an intelligent and curious creature and was much loved by Chooch. But growing up, we had Kat. Kat was very laid back and affectionate. Chooch considered it a great blessing for Kat to spend the night in her room, curled up on the bed next to her. When Kat passed away, it was my sister's first experience with death close to home and it devastated her.  She experienced a prolonged and deep grief at the loss of Kat.

Some of my favorite pictures of Chooch are those of her and Kat together. In them, she is always very contented or radiantly happy. I view these pictures with a special kind of layered and mirrored sadness because I love and miss both of them and I know that Chooch loved and missed Kat terribly, just as she must love and miss us terribly.

Chi-ping Hsu was a light to others. We met at ACED with Wendy. She was a lovely girl who was very pretty like her Mama and lots of fun to be around. In heaven we will all be together again. Heartbreaking loss for the family. Prayers and Peace to all of you.
