Chi Huu Nguyen, 92 yrs. old of Jamaica Plain, MA, passed away on November 27, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bich Thi Nguyen. He leaves behind 3 sons Hien Huu Nguyen, Quy Huu Nguyen and Tai Huu Nguyen and their families; and daughter Bich-Ngan Nguyen and her family. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren Jason, Ryan, Cory and Alyssa.

He was born on May 18, 1931 to Nhieu Nguyen & Canh Khien Thi Le in Hue, Vietnam. He was the 3rd child of 11 but the oldest male and, as such, took on the father figure role for his 8 younger siblings. Chi was a man before his time who loved to invent and tinker. Growing up he wanted to be an engineer but war times demanded that he be a doctor to support the military. He attended the University of Saigon School of Medicine 1970 – 1975, became a Major in the Army and practiced medicine at Cong Hoa military hospital in Saigon.

In 1974 at the age of 43, he traveled to the United States where he participated in a physician surgical training program via the agency for International Development of the U.S. State Dept. for spinal cord injury. While in the U.S., he practiced at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1978, he and his family moved to Boston, MA where he was a longtime resident physician at both the West Roxbury VA Hospital and the Brockton VA Hospital until his retirement in 1999.

Chi loved to travel, was adventurous, explored all things new and different and loved a good joke. He especially loved working on his computer and anything electronic. His strong spirituality led him and his wife to found the Buddhist Association of Massachusetts, which later established Temple Viet Nam in Roslindale. He was a dedicated student of Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh who blessed him with his Dharma name Chan Dat (True Attainment) and became part of the Order of Interbeing. He has translated a number of books from English to Vietnamese including the popular Anger by Thich Nhat Hanh.

A wake will be held at Wing Fook Funeral Home, 13 Gerard St. Boston MA 02119 from 5pm –8pm on Friday, December 2, 2022. Buddhist ceremonial services will be held at Temple Viet Nam, 68 Bradeen St, Roslindale MA 02136 at 1pm on Saturday, December 3, 2022.
