Cheryl's obituary
Cheryl Wanska of Crest Hill, IL passed away on February 3, 2022 after a short illness. Cheryl was born on January 31, 1949 to Pauline Buchholz Hardwig and William (Bill) Frank Hardwig in International Falls, MN. After graduating from Falls Senior High in 1967, she went on to study Business Administration and English majors at Moorhead State University. After graduation, she landed her first job as staff assistant for Deluxe check printing and worked on United Way projects.
In 1972 she met John Wanska at a singles social their apartment building was holding and their relationship started to blossom. They wed in 1974 going on to have two children; Erik John, and Kelsey Cheryl living in Naperville, IL.
While raising her children, and her cats, Cheryl started her own sewing business doing many alterations and specialty dresses. She also was active in quilting and made numerous quilts. She soon became President of the quilting club developing many close friendships and traveling with her quilting pals to various quilting events. Cheryl enjoyed playing Canasta, Sudoku puzzles, Scrabble, and especially her girls nights playing Bunko. Cheryl loved baking pies and cookies but disliked savory cooking immensely. She did bake herself an entire lemon meringue pie more than once or twice, knowing she would get to enjoy it all to herself. She loved eating good food and would try anything. We will miss her greatly.
Cheryl’s grandfathers, Paul Buchholz and William Hardwig, were deceased before Cheryls birth. Cheryl was predeceased by her grandmothers, Irene Buchholz and Rose Hardwig; parents, Pauline and Bill Hardwig; and husband, John Allen Wanska.
She is survived by her son, Erik Wanska; daughter, Kelsey Wanska Pettersen; sister, Sheila (Hank) Wiedemann; and brother, Bill (Peggy) Hardwig; Sister in law Louisa (Dennis) Wheeler, plus nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial to celebrate her life via Zoom on March 20 at 5PM central time, the first day of Spring. Cheryl loved Spring when the greenery would return and flowers would begin to pop up, especially she enjoyed seeing her Lilies bloom in her yard.
