Cheryl's obituary

Cheryl Don-Ell Poddig Mayfield, 55, of Springfield, MO, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2023  with her loving husband Dewey at her side, after a long battle with cancer.

Cheryl was born on June 23, 1968 to George and Donna (Rechtiene) Poddig in San Diego, CA.  She graduated from Parkview High School in 1986. While at Parkview, Cheryl was active in the  Lassie's Drum and Bugle Corps.  After high school, she worked various jobs  but eventually went on to become an EMT which  led her to her dream job of an EMS Dispatcher for Mercy Hospital, where she worked for 16 1/2  years.  In 2018, she was awarded the Mercy Life Line Communication Specialist of the Year.

In October of  2010, she married Dewey Mayfield.  Together they loved on Dewey's two sons, Tyler Mayfield (Springfield) and Tommy Mayfield (Gaffney, SC), niece/nephew-Hailee and Brendan Brown and Angela Gensman(Dustin) and their boys Thomas, Tyler, Wyatt, and Rowan; Landon, Brad, Statler, Cameron,  Michael and Kristi, Thomas, Kelsey, Aydan, Austyn, Amelie, Emma, and Hope.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents George and Donna Poddig. She is survived by her husband, Dewey Mayfield, Tyler and Tommy and sister Suzanne Brown (Steve), nieces Hailee and Angela and nephew Brendan.

Anyone who knew Cheryl, knew of her love for her dogs.  While Porsche and Katie have stayed behind with Dewey, Molly, Shelby, Shorty, and Mickey are all snuggled up with Cheryl watching a movie and eating popcorn.

Cheryl had many passions. She loved to cook and bake for her friends and family.  She loved to do crafts. She loved camping, grilling out, making homemade ice cream.  She loved Family Game Night, where you never knew what crazy activity she had planned.  Whether it was throwing cheeseballs onto your partners shaving cream-capped head, or tasting unique soda such as Dog Drool or Toxic Slime.

Camp Chi Rho was near and dear to her heart.  She served in many capacities over the years starting out as a counselor, then cook to camp 'nurse' and part of the leadership team.  And when Dewey came into the picture, she 'lovingly' roped him into volunteering.  She loved the kids, staff, and doing anything to help in leading kids to Christ and his Will for them.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 22,  from 5-8 pm at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2852 S Dayton Ave, Springfield, MO.  A short service will begin at 5pm will visitation/fellowship following.  If you have a favorite photo of Cheryl, please bring it or a story- please share it.
