Cheryl's obituary
She was born to Richard and Loy Lee Clark Holland on January 29th, 1957, in Bethesda, Maryland.
As a child, she grew up in Gardena, California, and the only thing that could hold her down was the back-brace she was required to wear. But after moving to Huntington Beach and attending Edison High School, class of ‘75, she was finally able to free herself of the brace and become the social butterfly we all knew and loved.
Cheryl was often the instigator for all of the fun shenanigans she and her friends got into in her young adult life. She had an insatiable thirst for life and a lovable wild side. Her great love of the river translated to many weekends spent enjoying it with family & friends throughout her lifetime. In seeming contrast, Cheryl was also an outstanding student, excelling in both her sciences and mathematics, which was a precursor to her lifelong career in the home loan field and her obsession with Sudoku puzzles.
Cheryl met her husband, Ed, in 1985, at their mutual friend’s birthday party, and he would be the eventual gateway to her becoming a Poker powerhouse playing with family in their monthly family tournaments. Cheryl was so dedicated to becoming the best Poker player that in her free-time, she would play hours upon hours of mock-games, writing down all of the probabilities of the various hands that could come up. This was the key to her success in the family Poker games, and she instantly became ‘the’ player to beat. If she was ever out-played, there would be a sigh of relief amongst the remaining family members that now didn’t have to play against her.
In addition to being a Poker mastermind, Cheryl was a dedicated and loving mother who was incredibly strong in her Christian faith. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which allowed her to share the Word with every person she came into contact with. The traits she cherished the most: in the character of others, was their honesty and integrity; in her family, was togetherness and love; in work, was dedication; and at home, was being full to the brim with life. She will forever be remembered for her strength, her faith, her outgoing nature, and her positive outlook in the face of adversity.
Cheryl joins her mother Loy Lee in Heaven. She is survived by her husband Ed, her children Chrysta, Alexandria, Jack, Amanda, and Carter, and her beloved grandchildren Jaeden, Kit, Tyler, and Hayden.
