Charlie proudly served in the Korean War as a 511 armorer, earning the rank of Private First Class. The majority of his service was spent in Korea, with his military career concluding at the northernmost point of Japan, where he received the Occupation Medal of Japan. He dedicated 2 years, 8 months, and 21 days to his service, with 2 years, 3 months, and 17 days spent overseas. Following an honorable discharge from the United States Army on July 6, 1950, Charlie eagerly returned home to his faithful wife, Betty.
With an array of talents, Charlie was a genuine cowboy and worked on two substantial cattle ranches in California. Indeed, he was a master of all trades he undertook. His professional journey led him to work in the oil fields of California and Nevada, with special assignments in New Mexico, Wyoming, and Ohio. He contributed to the layout of oil tank farms, monitored tank operations, and operated highly specialized steam generators.
Known and adored for his outstanding sense of humor, Charlie could always be relied upon to bring laughter, even in the most challenging moments. His ability to make others understand complicated matters with ease was a true gift. The world has lost an extraordinary man and one of the greatest mechanical minds of his generation. Charlie McCabe will be dearly missed, but his memory will forever remain alive in our hearts.
