Charles Guo Yao passed away on August 25, 2022 at the age of 14 after taking his own life. Charles, affectionately known in the family as Charlie, was born on July 15, 2008 to parents Jian Guo and Weixin Yao in Manhattan, Kansas.

Charles moved to Southern California with his family in 2014. He attended Bryant Ranch and Golden Elementary School, Kramer Middle School, and Troy High School.

Charles was loving, smart and independent. He was a caring big brother to his sister Kaylie, who he named, and a wonderful friend to a small group of friends. His favorite outdoor hobby was snowboarding and skiing, and he challenged his dad to get on double black diamonds at Mammoth. He dreamed about traveling between the northern and southern hemisphere so that he could snowboard all year round. He enjoyed swimming, playing soccer, ping-pong and tennis. He was an eager and passionate reader, carrying his books around everywhere. His favorites included Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Dog Man and Dairy of a Wimpy Kid. He loved sharing fun facts he learned from books and jokingly called himself a nerd. Charles learned Python, Java, and JavaScript on his own and talked about doing “computer stuff” and working for NASA when he grew up. He loved building and living in his own world in Minecraft as Charlesthegreat. His favorite fast food was Carl’s Jr.’s Jalapeno Angus Burger and Jalapeno Poppers Bites.

Even though Charles’s life on earth was cut short, he will forever be loved by his grandparents, parents, and sister. Services will be held privately. Our family welcomes any and all stories, photos, and memories that Charles’s friends would like to offer.
