Wes's obituary
Charles Wesley "Wes" Stevenson, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 9, 2024, in Naples, Florida at the age of 85. Born on August 15, 1938, in Philadelphia, PA, Wes led a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his passions.
Wes grew up and attended high school in Penns Grove, NJ, where he found a passion for sports, particularly gymnastics and football.
Wes proudly served in the US Air Force, retiring as an aircraft quality control inspector at the rank of Master Sergeant in 1976 after a distinguished 20-year career that included a tour of duty in Vietnam. His military service was a significant chapter in his life, reflecting his commitment and resilience.
Following his military career, Wes settled down with his family in Pennsville, NJ. He continued to apply his skills and work ethic at DuPont de Nemours Corp, where he retired as a laboratory technician at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE in 1998. His work spanned various positions and locations, contributing significantly to each role he undertook.
Wes loved to travel with his wife, Marie-May in their motorhome, crisscrossing the US and Canada many times over the first twelve years of retirement. They continued to travel in the motorhome together for at least five months of each year even after purchasing their condo in Naples, FL, in 2000. Eventually, they made the Asheville, NC, area their Summer home until seven years ago when they found it was becoming too difficult to maintain two residences.
An avid craftsman, Wes was happiest when working with his hands. His hobbies included fishing, woodworking, and tackling any mechanical repairs. He was renowned for his ability to fix nearly anything — a testament to his problem-solving abilities. More than anything, though, Wes loved his family and friends – young and old. He would often spend hours sitting and spinning fantastic tales for them that were nearly believable.
Wes's life was deeply enriched by his love for his family. He is survived by his wife, Marie-May (Therrien) Stevenson; children, Mark Wesley (Jenifer) Stevenson and Sherrie (Daniel) DeLong; grandchildren, Charles Wesley ("Charlie") Stevenson, Tatiana (Max) Cameron, Trenedy Lutz, and Jessica DeLong; and great-grandchildren, Josephine, Charlotte, Cody, Laniya, and Lieanna. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins across the US and Canada. Wes was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wesley Stevenson, Sr. and Helen Stevenson, and siblings, Gary (Joanne) Stevenson and Shirley (Hans) Mueller.
Wes's remains will be inurned with full military honors in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. A private celebration of his life is planned to be held at his son's home in Maryland in July, reflecting his preference for intimate gatherings filled with family, friends, food, and drink.
Wes Stevenson’s legacy is one of love, service, and craftsmanship, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
